I was knocked out for mine and it was eeeeasy!
If your wisdom teeth are impacted (stuck behind other teeth), that is when the procedure can be hell! Then I would say get general anesthetic for sure. Even though mine were not impacted, I still got knocked out.
Quick. Easy. Minimal suffering. Worth a few hundred bucks in my opinion.

I got a quote for $2300 from an Oral Surgeon in Kelowna to take 4 of them out, and my plan only covers like 50% of that. Whereas the local guy here can do it for about $1300 and it will cost me like 560 out of pocket. The two bottom ones are going to be tough too as the roots are good and long and they're slightly embedded into the gums.
But times are tough and Pain is free so I'm going in without getting put out and taking 3 Ativan's first. I have serious anxiety about the dentist too, and the last time I had a crown done the freezing wore off during the proceedure while they were grinding the tooth down. It's going to suck worse than the economy.

I was 17 when mine got pulled. The dentist took xrays and decided that they would be easy to pull out. So an appointment was made for the first two, and then 3 weeks later the 2nd two.
I go in, they're doing the right side of my mouth first. Well, apparently my bottom jaw doesnt' take to freezing. And apparently my mother has had the same problem in the past. I felt it. And i heard it. And to top it off, they didnt' realize just how far down my bottom wisdom tooth was and had to DIG it out. They actually had to shave off part of my jaw bone. It was descusting and it sounded rude, and i bled for days.
The 2nd appointment wasn't so bad except again bottom jaw didnt' freeze all the way, but, at least they didn't have to dig and shave bone.
Bottom line, get the gas. Forget about this "man up" crap. Just get the gas. Over and done with in 3 days tops, you're good to go.
My dentist still apologizes to me to this day for that....and that was....well, i was 17 so...a long time ago.

I had mine done last december and in my opinion you should get put out. It's just far less of a hassle and well worth the money. Hopefully your surgeon/procedure is as good as mine was as i didn't not swell at all and was eating poutine and getting grinded on by stripers in montreal two days later. Good times.

I got sedated to remove my wisdom teeth (2). I don't remember anything except counting backwards from 10 to 1 (didn't reach until 1 though) and waking up asking the nurse/assistant if it was over. I kept asking her over and over again if it was over. Had taken pain killers but only for 2 days then it was ok.

Not for the OP, but ladies should remember the possible gender-specific side-effects of sedation dentistry... Pregnancy.

I was awake when they ripped my 4 out. A local, some nitrous oxide, and headphones made the experience fairly quick and painless. I thought it was cool when the freezing started to wear out, and could feel the last tooth breaking apart.

If you don't have to go under don't. Most complications arise when people are out.

The time when I got my broken wisdom tooth taken out was perhaps the least uncomfortable dentist experience I've had. Pretty much painless, over fairly quickly, and no drilling or polishing.
I went in dreading it, and was pleasantly surprised as to how easy it was.
Of course, the headache for the next week wasn't as fun.

I got all four done in one shot, and there was no way in hell I was stayin conscious for that s***. Thank God I didn't too, as two of my teeth were so hard to get out that they shattered. I guess I was bleeding more than usual too.
All I'm gonna say is, in the days after you've had the surgery, do NOT eat anything small(ie rice)!! Get anything stuck in there and you're in dry socket country my friend. One of the worst pains I've ever felt. It feels like a constant migraine that just won't go away no matter how much tylenol you take(I got a piece of rice caught under the flap).

I was super stoned after I had mine out. I got off the recovery room table, and was going through the drawers in the doctors office, taking out scalpels and stuff. They had to restrain me after that.

Do you actually have a problem with them or is this the typical dentist response upon seeing wisdom teeth? Woah, wisdom teeth, they gotta go. I've had mine for around seventeen years and I've had to defend them from extraction with every dentist I've seen over that time. I've not had one single problem, yet they all (to a person) want to schedule an extraction. And they tell all sorts of horror stories to shock and awe you into getting it done. Anyway, I just tell them that if I ever experience a problem with them, I'll let them know. So far, so good.

Yup, still have three of mine, they have never bothered me. The fourth one was broken off for a long time, and still never bothered me. Finally got it pulled out anyway.

I have all mine still, but I've had the initial visit with the surgeon and will schedule something for perhaps August. Mine are not bothering me either, but I'm getting tired of all the whining the hygenist and the dentist give me when I'm in there. The dentist did have a good point - they aren't bothering me now, but since I'm (relatively) healthy it makes sense to get them out as a preventative measure. If you leave them in you ocould develop an infection which could be be a bad thing later in life. I also think it might help give my teeth some room to roam as they are all pretty tightly packed. Flossing is tough to do between some of them.
On the sedation topic, my dentist looked at the xray and just referred me to the oral surgeon. Mine are impacted and a couple of the roots are "horse clipped" so they wouldn't be easy to pull out. He said I could have him extract them which would take a long time, a lot of effort, and more pain afterwards or I could go to the surgeon, get knocked out, and have him cut them out and be done in 20 mins.

I think you should first shop around for the best dental surgeon you can find. Then consider acting on his recommendation re sedation.
I would follow his directions very carefully re post op. I mistakenly went to the bar right after having mine out and ended up with two dry sockets which took months to heal.

Have you ever seen a dentist drive a Hyundai? Whining and fearmongering make a good business apparently. I got the same "preventative measure" talk. Flossing is preventative; brushing is preventative; pulling teeth out is invasive. By the same logic, we should all get appendectomies as a preventative for appendicitis (heck, that could even kill you - a sore tooth...not that i'm aware of.)

The thing about the wisdom teeth is that they can kinda suddenly start causing great discomfort. I know mine did. Over the course of a week, I went from normal life to fairly intense pain. I had to get it done ASAP.

You should go to my dentist's office. (Sunshine Dental in Sunridge Mall). They are against pulling wisdom teeth for no reason. They even gave me a filling on one of my wisdom teeth once. As long as they are functional and not too rotten they won't pull them. I eventually had to get 3 out 4 wisdom's pulled and it was easy for me. (I don't take very good care of my teeth...) Had my mouth frozen and was out of there in 5 minutes. But you might want to try to hang on to your wisdom teeth if you can. There are stem cells in there and in the near future they might even be able to re-grow other teeth from your wisdom's.
