It may be the most popular, but that's doesn't necessarily make it best show, either now or ever.
No disrespect to House, which is a great show, but Flames games are the best TV programming currently available, and M*A*S*H is the best TV series ever.

Best TV Dramas in my opinion are The Wire and The Sopranos.
Excellent writing.

The character "Fonzie" was always about how it was "cool to be the nice guy." He had a motorcycle accident in his past, and it changed him into someone who didn't like to show off etc etc. He made it cool to be "uncool" as it were.
...and then, the ratings started slipping and all of a sudden, they throw everything out the window and make Fonzie jump over a shark on water skis. My understanding is that they flip-flopped on his character and tried to make him into the opposite of who he always was (in an effort to get more ratings).
Which is why I scratch my head at how some people use the expression.
(as it relates to House and the afore-mentioned poll... the article says that the majority of the people who voted for House, did so because they are tired of Olivia Wilde's character (13) and think the show would be better without her... not exactly the typical definition of "jumped the shark")
Jumping the shark is a colloquialism coined by Jon Hein and used by TVcritics and fans to denote the point in a TV show or movie series' history where the plot veers off into absurd story lines or out-of-the-ordinary characterizations. This usually corresponds to the point where a show with falling ratings apparently becomes more desperate to draw in viewers. In the process of undergoing these changes, the TV or movie series loses its original appeal. Shows that have "jumped the shark" are typically deemed to have passed their peak.
The phrase has been used more recently outside the realm of popular culture, representing anything that has reached its peak and has declined in quality. If one thinks a stock or a sports team or a subcultural phenomenon has reached its peak, for example, one can say that it has "jumped the shark."
How to play:
X jumped the shark when Y.
Rush jumped the shark when they rapped on Roll The Bones.
troutman jumped the shark when he made a thread called Jumping The Shark.

Ya, we all have our own choices for that, usually depending on our age and era. For me, I think M*A*S*H was brilliant because it attacked and broke down so many social taboos, and happened to be a good comedy at the same time. All In The Family deserves credit for taking on social issues in its day too.
I no longer watch sitcoms and TV dramas much though so I can't comment on more recent shows. Over the years the inanity of network TV eventually got to me and I just don't have the stomach to watch much stuff anymore.
I'll second The Wire as the best modern television and also second MASH as the greatest TV show of all time.
House is pretty good, but I keep expecting Hugh Laurie to appear on screen in a powdered wig and melon hose.
Given how close Hugh Laurie was to being typecast as a foppish and cheerful idiot early in his career (between Blackadder and Jeeves & Wooster), it's really amazing that he'll probably be most remembered for playing a grumpy genius.

There's little question that House is a great show. However, if you own a PVR then you might find that you won't watch it as much as its ratings suggest you should. PVR + sports channels = no more spare TV time for House.

I own all five seasons in HD and I watch all the previous seasons during each offseason. After Season One, I re-watched it again. After Season Two, I watched Season One and Season Two again... etc etc.
This year's going to be hectic, trying to watch all five seasons before September rolls around and Season Six starts...
love House. It was one of the first shows i began watching from start to finish and the first show i started watching when it actually started. Been a big fan for years. Yes its a little formulaic but it works. This seasons finale was AWESOME. That said I cant wait for July 17th and new ENTOURAGE!
