Okay fair enough, because you live or lived there. But what is Shanghai doing to promote the Expo? At least with the Olympics or World Cup they don't really need any promotion, everyone knows what they're about and would be willing to attend regardless of location. But what actually goes on at an Expo? As I understand it, each country puts together a little paviliion advertising their country. But why would I want to go to Shanghai to learn about Bulgaria? If I went to Shanghai I would be there to check out Shanghai and if I wanted to go to Bulgaria I would go to Bulgaria. Maybe it's just me but the concept seems a bit foreign. I'd check it out if it was nearby, but I am not going to plan a big trip around it. Again, maybe it's just me.

Did I not just provide a post informing you that Shanghai is expecting 70 million visitors to the Expo?! There are more people than double the population of Canada willing to attend.
Also, take a look at the link. It's going to be a great event.

No, I agree with others. IF this screws Edmonton over, then Edmonton wasn't prepared to host this in the first place.

By George I wish someone would do it already too.

We are now the two year old who doesn't know how to share. We fne were sitting playing with our favourite toys (designer bridges, escalators to Nowhere, Popsicle stick towers and giant mangnifying glasses) and then edmonton picks up another toy (expo) and all of a sudde we want it.

At least I voted for Kotos.

I'm an alderman in a city in Alberta (not Calgary or Edmonton). I'm glad that you Edmonton haters are seeing this for what it is, a lame-ass, cowardly move by Calgary city council. When Calgary has made a bid before for a major event, I remember Edmonto supported it. That's what good civic leaders should do. If one city hosts a major event like this, there is spin-off benefit for the other. The smart thing to do would have been to support Edmonton's bid and it'll come back to you. To sneak arouund like this and mount some closed-door campaign to win this event is very bad form.

Point 2: I see a lot of hate for Bronco here. If you think things like this will be enough to get him unseated, well that's highly unlikely. Good luck getting an incumbent tossed, unless he does something monumentally stupid.

Point 3: This isn't on Bronco anyway. Nothing like this happens because of the mayor's say-so. This was done by your city council. I suggest you let them know you don't like this chicken-**** tactic.

Point 4: Edmonton's bid is very solid and stands a good chance, well it did up until just recently. If you think this doesn't jeopardize a good bid, that's wrong. This may jeopardize the whole thing.

This was a lousy thing for Calgary city council to do. First off, support the bid that stands the best chance. Don't hide in dark corners to devise some way of screwing Edmonton. Wow! Good on your folks for seeing this for what it is.

By the way, cities like this, while also rivals, work together in lots of areas, more than you know. It's a crappy thing to do to a partner. If Bill Smith was mayor, I'd hate to be Bronco the next time they meet. Smith might have punched his lights out. Mandel won't.

I've read a little bit more into the issue, and ultimately it makes Calgary look like a bunch of clowns. I love Calgary, lived there for 22 years of my life and plan to get back there someday...but this is stupid.

Edmonton has basically been working on this muscle car for the past year for a big race. Spent lots of money on it, put lots of work into making it shine. Then the morning of the big race, Calgary decides...I want to race too, takes 200 bucks goes to Farmer Jonez in Inglewood and gets a '89 Ford Tempo. We all know how this is going to end, in embarrassment for Calgary. If you're going to try for an event like this, and by all means, I think it's something Calgary should have made a decent attempt for. But put in some effort and get some plans ready to not embarrass yourself.

Yeah well maybe Edmonton will forget to fill up on gas on the morning of the race, and our rusty jalopy sputters across the finish line. Go Tempo!

Calgary hasn't voted out an incumbent mayor who was seeking re-election since Klein was elected in 1980. Duerr was elected after Klein moved on to Provincial politics and Bronco got elected after Duerr decided to not run again.

I guess Don Hartman was technically the mayor when Duerr won, but he only got the job after Ralph left, and he never won a Mayoral election.

Totally bush league. They should have simply tried to combine the bid for a better chance on the world stage.

You didnt read the whole post, or neglected to quote the relevant parts....By Calgary applying, it forces the Alberta Government to either fund both bids or fund neither....thats how it has jeopordized Edmontons bid.....

Edmonton marinates in a culture of failure, Calgary was simply attempting to offer the Exposition committee a less fatally doomed option.

Did I not say "I'd check it out if it was nearby, but I am not going to plan a big trip around it"? Considering there are about 145 million people in the area surrounding Shanghai (Shanghai municipality, Jiangsi, and Zhejiang alone) you haven't really convinced me that a large or majority segment of those people in attendance will be coming from abroad, which is really my point. 70 million people planning to attend an Expo in Shanghai over the course of a year doesn't really impress me as much as 70 million people planning to attend an Expo in Edmonton would.

I do not doubt for a second that it will be an amazing event. It just seems to me that as far as Expos go most people who attend don't travel too far to do so. You really don't hear much about Expos unless you happen to be near one, probably due to insufficiency of global promotion. By contrast, the Olympics and FIFA World Cup get much more publicity and generate much more overseas travel interest, it seems to me.

No, I read it. But lets be honest. Alberta is going to promise funds to both. I'm not defending whoever launched this Calgary bid, but your overreaction is rather comical.

Also, keep in mind that at this point, we're just talking about who gets the right to represent Canada in the bid process. Ultimately, once the candidate city is picked, Calgary will throw its support behind either Edmonton or Hamilton, whichever city actually wins the right to bid.
