Honestly, I love my ipod, however mine was free (Thanks pepsi, even though I don't drink soda)For someone like me a dinky 128 mb mp3 player is no good.. I have about 2500 songs on my ipod and thats not even half of the music on my computer. I thought I'd never need more songs but I'm having trouble deciding what to listen to right now, but I still have about 10 gigs free on my ipod so once I get around to it I'll be set. I never leave home without my ipod, the only drawback to it I can see is that the battery life is only 8-12 hours, then it needs to be recharged. Its not so bad though.. I don't know if I could justify paying for one though.

I'm glad you started this post because I'm wondering some of the same things....
I don't want an IPOD because they're big and expensive. I'm leaning towards an I-River and have read good reviews about them on epinions.com .
Now I'm trying to figure out if I should get 128, 256, or 512K. I'm not quite sure what would be enough for me.

A question though... What is the difference in sound quality between mp3 and wma format? WMA's are a smaller file size aren't they?

IMO There isn't much of a difference, I bet if I played a song in mp3 format and played it again in WMA, you couldn't tell me which is which.

lol that is hillarious. treehuggers!

on the note of mp3 players... i just bought one on ebay. 20 gigs. 196 dollars including shipping arrived at my house in 1 day. very impressed at the price and it is smaller than an ipod and has a few more features. Sound quality was bad with the headphones... but i put sony ones on it and it was really good. Transfer was fast, comes with an MMC/SDCARD reader. very good deal. Much better than ipod .

I also have a samsung yepp 128 mb cost me 200 bucks at the end of may from future shop. TINIEST player available... even today i believe. It is only like 5cm long. i think i will buy another flash mp3 player in a bit... a lot biggger, looking at 1gig... because this 20 gig is about the size of my wallet, and i like to have it smaller than that.

If you want small size->go flash. I recommend samsung yepp, i love it casue it is so small.
If you want storage I recommend there is sony 15 gig player.... that is the best one they sell in teh stores or try mine. It is an s-media cocopod... found it on ebay... good deal and it was cheap!!

if you want small size and good storage... go get a minidisc player. My minidisc ( i know too many music players lol) player is smaller than this mp3 player i just bought. and it is very expandble. Each disc holds from 650-700 mbs. As well minidiscs are not too expensive. 2 bucks each or so. Plus the recorder/players for the discs are alot cheaper now than a few years ago. The advantage of minidiscs is SOUND I think. My sony minidisc sounds and gets much louder than my mp3 players.

Has anybody tried the new players out from Dell ?
- DJ 20: 20 GB
- Pocket DJ: 5 GB
I got an IPOD for Christmas, but since I dont have Windows 2000 (i still have ME) it's not compatible with my computer, and I havent been able to use it yet. THerefore I;m thinking about returning the ipod and stepping up and buying a new computer and music player on the same financing plan.
Dell's players
But I would like to know if anyone has bought one of these devices............or maybe someone has some good/bad stories about Dell in general.

I believe the Dell players are repackaged Creative Labs players, so the audio quality is top notch. I've read the interface isn't as good as the iPod, but that was the previous generation.

You might also consider the Creative Labs ones.

This is the one I just bought.

I am pretty happy with it.

It has 70 hours of battery life which sold me on it.

Yup, HDD based ones are quite a bit more. 5 x the storeage of yours, but if you don't need that the 70 hour battery life is awesome compared to 10-15.

I have a 20GB Dell DJ from the previous generation. I have had a couple of replacement players ( I broke the first one ) that had hard disk failures. Of course, those were replaced for free in 1 day. I finally got a replacement (refurbished) player that is working great now. I have used about 1/4 of the disk space and have 1800 songs on it.

My problem now is that I need to find a good set of headphones that I can use at work. I think I'm going to have to fork out about $200 US to get what I need. Ugh.
