I think it is still 2 weeks but then once you qualify it takes another 2 weeks to get your first cheque. I have read a few stories saying that they are looking at removing the 2 week waiting period.
And yes, they are suppose to be looking for work but that is pretty hard to police.

When my wife was on it here in the states.... There is so much in the fund depending on how much you work .... She could use all that was in the fund .... when she was on it she had 14 months worth .... however it was only 320 dollars and she was making 815$ a week at the show she worked at .....
She also had to prove she was doing 2 work searches a week ( sending out her resume etc).
The good thing is that her dance job in Branson was from Mar-Nov..... She could get unemployment for the 3 months the show was not running...

Thanks guys for all the comments and help, I talked to my sister today and read some of the comments to her and I think she may look at a short term leave of absence she had a miscarriage (early in her pregnancy) and just is struggling with it day to day to top it off my brother in law was recently diagonosed with colon cancer.

With that bit of info, I would say this would fall under short term medical leave. Assuming she has that kind of coverage, then it would also be better for her in terms of how much she gets paid.

Me so smart!
I just had a co-worker quit and he qualified for EI, which made little sense to me. But he is collecting the checks! However he went from $8K a month to $2,500 so he is a bit lost when it comes to his spending habits he was use to.

Sorry to hear that.
The STLA is a better option as opposed to quitting. She may also want to talk to her GP and see if he can put her on stress leave and maybe find her some professional help.

I thought approximately $467/week for $2000/month was the maximum.

You can get away with that if you can prove you didn't quit voluntarily. That would cover things like verbal abuse at work your company refused to do anything about (so they can't make you so miserable you quit), allergens introduced into the workplace after you started, etc.
No idea if that covers your "friend", but there are ways you can quit and qualify for EI, but as far as I know those are all investigated.

It could be I don't know the exact number he is getting. I thought he said $2500 but I could have heard wrong.
And how do they expect people to live off that? I would struggle making that every two weeks. Shouldn't it just be a straight percentage not a max?

I was on unemployment for nearly 8 months
every 2 weeks i had to fill out some thing online..
yes or no questions
Did you look for work? YES
Were you ready and able to start a job YES
things like that
I didn't have to provide ANY proof of my job search.
And when I was on the max you could get was something like 750 every 2 weeks.
