Actually about 40 seconds after I saw the post. Just late to the thread.

I stongly advise against this. Nothing would suck more for him (I am guessing student) than getting arrested, getting his study permit taken away, and then getting an exclusion order.

How would he get arrested? It's all under the table.

Are you saying it's unlawful or illegal to work without a government SIN?

Nothing wrong with a guy getting paid cash for a little manual labour here and there. If the gov't could tax that or if the cops could bust you for illegal work in that fashion, I fear for the future of all my friends that will pick me up from the airport for $20.

My late father used that place all the time for casual labour when he was working construction. Funny how that corner has been around for years and i've never heard of anyone being arrested.

There would be an uproar if the cops cracked down on cash corner. Most of those guys are down-on-their-luck skids or recovering something-or-others.
At least they're earning their spending money instead of panhandling or stealing.

I have used these guys in the past. Two guys to dig fence posts for a retaining wall. Paid them, fed them McD's for lunch and never heard from them again after that day. The were crazy good at digging for one day! I had to do the rest of the work myself...
That was back in '93 and I imagine that corner has been around a lot longer than that. I don't think the gov't or cops have much of an issue with. Now being American with legal working status might be an issue but it is not like he is taking away a CEO position.
I see it as mo different than paying your buddies in beer when they help you out.

There is a big difference between a "down-on-their-luck" Canadian working cash corner and an American having a friend advertize their services on a website. With the Canadian it is up to them to report their earnings to Revenue Canada; so the burden of proof would be on the police to prove that 10 months from now the guy was going to lie about how much he earned in 2009.
I think that's where the caution was being thrown out before; if you are planning on going down to cash corner to work illegally, don't advertize the fact.
There's also another risk; if an employer finds out the person is working illegally, the employer could call the police (or Canada's version of the INS) at the end of the shift if they really wanted to be a jerk.

I am pretty sure that the cops and everyone have a lot better things to do with their time then to go around to peoples houses and bust a kid for making 75 bucks for doing labor for someone who didn't feel like doing it himself of paying a company to do it. I am sure that the Canadian government is more worried about trying to get tax money from everyone on ebay selling thousands of dollars of goods.

I guess I agree, Ken. But you're mixing two points. I think that the cops would be stupid to shut down cash corner for the reason you quoted. And seperately from that, I don't think there's much wrong with a guy working for 4 hours helping someone move and/or doing the odd manual labour job, regardless of whether he's legally entitled to work in this country.
I'm surprised to hear myself say that, but just the way this situation strikes me, some uni student just wants a bit of spending cash and he's willing to do odd jobs for it. Big deal.
As for calling the police, I think the police have more important things to do than bust people that worked for a few hours for cash. If working under the table were a true epidemic, the cops would start by busting every small restaurant in the country for their cooks and dishwashers being under the table.

That is why that all business' have the "Cash" portion for their taxes of submitting claims without proving what they used the money for

fundmark your buddy did an awesome job, the Guatamalan dude I got to help was pretty decent, minus the fact he spent like 15 mins taking the coins in my empty dresser drawers lol.
If anyone needs a good worker, fundmarks friend is a great choice.

Great. Now we're going to have a bunch of illegal Americans crossing the border and stealing jobs from us Canadians.
Way to go Thor.
