Ok, for anyone who tries the deep fried jelly beans, let us know how it went.

We went to the grounds today, debated the deep fried Oreo and jelly beans, but decided to best avoid it. However, the tornado potato is awesome!

I had a friend who had a tornado potato in Vancouver and said it was crap. I'm glad to hear it was good here. I'm heading out tomorrow and I am definitely going to try this.

All things Stampede must be burned to the ground. There can be no exceptions. The call never varies. Never.

Well I got my tickets to the chuckwagons next Saturday. Now if only I can convince the lady friend to come to the rodeo as well. Also, I've gotta track down a new set of boots and a new hat. Tried my old one on and my dome is just too big for it. Lammles here I come!

The only thing I can't stand about the Stampede is all the country music I keep hearing.

Aside from that, it's cool. Of course, I won't be wasting $15 to head down the grounds this year. Since I also don't drink, I won't be partaking in any pub crawls, or heading down to Cowboys and getting wasted. It's nice seeing everyone having fun during these 10 days, and really getting into the whole Stampede thing.

Everyone? I can't think of a single longtime Calgarian who gets into the Stampede thing. Sure might hit up a breakfast, will visit the grounds once on a free day and maybe do another Stampede event but most of the days I pay no attention to it whatsoever. I enjoy my limited exposure but it's old hat and the only people I know who really get into it are those who haven't been here long. Maybe if I worked downtown I'd do more but it's the same old same old every year.

I just had the potato tornado and it was the best thing EVER! I'm not a big carnival junk food girl, but seriously this thing was awesome. For those that go to BP's it's basically a stack of cactus cut potatoes on a stick. But the potato is one long chip. It was deep fried to perfection!! I could see them getting grosser as the week wears on due to the oldness of the oil through the use, but who knows, maybe that will make them better.

That is by far my new favorite snack ever, yes, I said EVER!

I had the deep fried jelly bellys. Wouldn't recommend them. Actually tasted like jam and batter...meh.

Didn't see that Stampede XLS file distributed this year like previous years. I wonder how many parties were cancelled. I know of at least 12 companies that aren't having a party this year.

Wait, I've got it. You can find the spreadsheet here:

Stampede Spreadsheet

Edit: I work in the IT sector, and our company and a few of our vendors aren't throwing parties this year. It's a shame, but better that than getting laid off.

I tried this today and give it a resounding thumbs down. It was mediocre at best.

Funny enough I had tornado potatoes for the first time ever this year, but not here. It was on Cheung Chau Island, which is about a 30 min boat ride from Hong Kong lol. They were tasty. The guy had all sorts of seasonings too. Garlic and cheese...mmm...

Also I went to the Grandstand show for the first time ever last night, and I've been here my whole life! I must say, pretty good package for $40. Included entry into the grounds, AND I got to see the chucks live and the Grandstand show, which was much better than I thought it would be. It was almost Vegas quality! Acrobats, singing, dancing, fireworks and a stand up comic (a Russell Peters wannabe lol. Funny though.)

The only real downer was the rain. Other than that I've got to say it was one of the best Stampede experiences I've had...well..possibly ever

P.S. I just saw the Five Guys Burgers and Fries thread. Had no idea who they were until I saw their ad on one of the wagons yesterday heh.

Hahaha. As far as cost:enjoyment ratios go. This ranks pretty high up there. It was a good snack. I really enjoyed it.

BTW, I got the deep fried cheese cake today. What a let down. Piece of cheese cake in a tortilla then fried. So small for $7.
