What part of the Res do you fish?
We used to fish around the Glenmore causeway but not sure about acces now with the construction. We also used to go down to the end of 90th ave and then walk down almost right to where the river came into the Res. Pretty nice spot down there actually for something in the middle of the city.

Well I USED to bait fish (with bait fish) on the point at the 14th st turnaround. I spoon fish at the bottom of the dam in that big pool.
Holy frack I feel like such a moron. I just checked my guide book and indeed it says bait fish not allowed. WTF? How the hell did I not see that before? Guess I'm switching back to cheese or corn and going after trout. No more smelt and pike. Damn we're lucky we didn't get busted for that.

I think cheese and corn are considered "bait" too:
Bait – means any substance that attracts fish by scent or flavour and includes a lure to which scent or flavouring has been added (See “Fishing with Bait”).
Did you prepare your pike "poached"?

The book (now that I've read it) says specifically "bait fish not allowed". My interpretation of that is that for bait, I cannot use fish, such as smelt. Therefore, all other bait is legal.
edit** Lol @ the poached joke.

We've gone down to that area by the dam as well. Whenever we are there the only thing we catch are super tiny Pike that are hardly bigger than our spoons. It's amazing how small the fish are that we seem to catch there. I may go try it out again one of these nights soon.
In all the times I have fished the Res I have only ever pulled out one Brown Trout. Every other fish has been a Pike. I'd love to pull a few more trout out of there.

Right, there is a different defintion for "bait fish":
http://www.albertaregulations.ca/fishingregs/
I'm surprised that any "bait" is allowed in the City's drinking supply.

Gonna bump an old thread, I was going to post a new thread, but then I figured I'd google it first.. google "good place for fishing around calgary", and this thread is the first hit. Gotta love CP.
Anyway, any suggestions for something close to Calgary (preferably on the east side) that I can go fishing this weekend with my 6 year old kid and have some kind of chance of catching something worth eating? I see people fishing the lake here in Chestermere but no idea if the fish are edible.
Or even what time of day to go. Total fishing n00b, my knowledge of fishing is flashlight = good.
TIA

I not sure if I comprehend this.
The res is full of live fish that eventually die and become dead fish, which are the same as bait.
To top it off there is no ban on seagulls crapping in it either. So the addition of any bait in which people are game enough to put on a hook by hand, should not be any worse than what nature is putting in there every day.

Not on the east side, but Cochrane has a stocked pond that kids can take fish from (adults can fish too, but only catch and release). No license required. As far as times go, usually early morning and early evening are good. I find fish don't bite too often in the mid-day heat.

This bridge over the Bow River on Hwy 2 seems to very popular with fishermen. Every day I drive over it and every day there are multiple vehicles parked there by fishermen.
