You can if you combine it with a server, but if you don't it's basically the same as the WD thing except that it does it over the network; the WD box with a network port.
Personally I'd be annoyed by having to cart a drive around, I'd rather have a home media server sitting in the basement and then boxes on the TVs that I can put media on and stream to the various boxes.

SageTV was originally PVR software for your PC. They now build PVR extender boxes (which is the link I posted) that work standalone just like a popcorn hour or the WD box, as well as an extender for a PC running SageTV.

Fair enough, but I really have no issue with copying files to and plugging in a small flash drive. If I had to cart drives around, plug them in etc, then I might find it a hassle, but a small 8 GB flash drive makes things pretty easy.
So far I'm really enjoying the WD player. It's done everything I needed.

Yeah if the WD box had a network cable, I'd be all over it.

the small form factor is nice, but the only advantage i see over using my Xbox360 to stream content is the HD aspect. otherwise i'm perfectly happy keeping all my movies and TV shows stored on my PC and letting the 360 read directly from it. i just wish Microsoft would update the OS and enable .mkv playback

Well, to be fair, that's a pretty big aspect. I'm watching a BD rip at 720p of Taken right now with DTS surround sound and it's incredible.

The biggest difference is networking capability, right now I have the PH networked with my PC so I can play files straight off my hard drive. The PH also has component and S/PDIF outputs. Also not sure on the WD, but compatability wise I haven't come across many files that I haven't been able to play with the Popcorn Hour.
The only downside is the interface isn't the greatest, and is definitely a step down if you've been using Xbox Media Player/Center. To be honest, for music/pictures/non-hd files I would use the Xbox, and for HD files I would use the Popcorn Hour.

Interesting links kremb. Nothing for me personally as the unit already does everything I need, but I'm sure others will find those links very useful. Thanks.

The more people that use this thing and make requests for features the better it will become. Plus, if more people are downloading HD content it will become more available online.
Here is an RFD thread on the best prices on the WDTV.

If a critical mass is reached, I could see a pseudo appleTV like hack for this thing.
I already saw a nice little apple trailers app for the WDTV somewhere in my travels like they have for XBox media center.

People interest in this, it is on sale this weekend at Memory Express ($99.99).
Is that a deal, or do they often go for that amount?

I paid $149 and it's on sale at BB again for $149, so yeah, $50 less is a good deal.
Oh and thanks for the note about this. Printed the page and going to BB to get my $50 back...

I just picked this up @ Costco (129.00) here in Victoria, and although I havent thrown much @ it so far, i am very impressed. the 1080p mkv of "The International" played flawlessly on my usb drive. I ordered my linksys router so i can bridge the connection, and am looking at the best value for the usb network adaptor. this thing is pretty awesome so far.

Anyone have any experience with the LaCie product?
http://www.lacie.com/us/company/news/news.htm?id=10492
Seems a little bit over priced... but Dell and futureshop often have the LaCie hard drives on sale so maybe this will come up there as well.
Not sure if the DVR component would work with Shaw or Bell... something tells me it would not.
No mention on what codecs/video formats it will play

Apparently with those add on enclosure type hard drives you need one that does NOT go to sleep to work with the bell pvr. That isn't so easy to find in this energy saving world.

The 2nd pic is the back of the RECORD model. It's got a co-ax input, s-video, and composite, and stereo audio. Looks like the DVR portion is only for SD.
Unless it can somehow get a HD stream from USB (I don't know of any set top boxes that do this without a mod), or it's a cablecard media center (highly unlikely), it'll be a SD DVR.
ETA: Good video codec support but no FLAC or M4A. Boo.
http://www.itechnews.net/2009/06/03/...media-players/
It does claim 802.11n support so that's something. I'm still skeptical of any wireless device claiming HD streaming, particularly at 1080p.

So you download stuff, put it on a usb thumb drive, plug it into this WDTV Media player thing and watch movies?
Similar to burning divx movies on a dvd and then watching them on a divx dvd player?
Are there other purposes for this device?

So essentially to get this working over a lan I just have to:
1) Buy the unit
2) Buy the USB wired network adapter
3) Download and install the latest WDLXTV firmware
4) Download and install the WDTV web interface (I assume that's how you share files from the computer to the WDTV unit?)
and voila?
Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.
And thanks for the heads up on this device oilkiller.
