What do they feed/forage (do they forage?) on when the ice melts?
More frequent encounters? Longer time where there is a probability of encounters?
Just curious as to behavioral patterns.
Great pictures BTW.

There will be both male and female bears close to town shortly. They usually come trying to find food. The Inuit sometimes bury meat and "age" it before they eat it. This often attracts the bears to town who can smell the meat.
Polar bears, in general, do not feed much when the ice is gone. They try and fatten up as much as possible during the winter to last all summer.
Bear will usually come off the ice and be roaming the land in July and will stick around until the ice freezes. When I got back here in Aug. we saw maybe 12 bears.
2 came to eat whale carcasses that were left out by the docks.
We drove right up on a female bear while taking the dogs for a run.
A mother and 2 cubs were spotted in town and were frightened away.
I looked outside my classroom window one day and there was a bear eating the dog food. Obviously really desperate.
If a bear comes into town and sticks around it will get shot. The ones that stick around are the desperate ones. Sometimes a bear will come back several times.
There were 2 or 3 bears shot last year by the wildlife officer.
