The dumbest thing I ever read was by Alderman Colley-Urquhart (however you spell it)...She said that it is unacceptable to have police work privately in uniform (for extra cash) for private companies on their own time, since we don't have enough police on the streets. So, in other words, since we only have so many police budgeted for, how dare we have any organization (saddledome, events etc.) try to hire the police on their own time? How does that make any sense at all? In essence, if someone could hire a police officer on their day off to basically be a police officer at no charge to the city, then we have more police on the streets (at no cost to the taxpayer). But this fool fought this...

I guess I should've known, and I certainly do now - it's all about slanting the facts, not reporting the facts or analyzing the facts. Slant sells.

Anno Domini is "in the year of our Lord", isn't it? That's why academics and historians are leaning towards CE, or Common Era now, although as an atheist I say, "Who cares?"
|
Yep. The same thing happened to me. I wrote a letter back when the Flames sucked and they were talking about relocation, and a bunch of people had written in saying stuff like "screw 'em, let them go if they're going to hold us hostage". It pissed me off so I wrote a letter that wasn't nearly as long winded as I am on here, about 4 or 5 sentences, and they gutted it to the point where it sounded like I basically insulted all Flames fans, then they put my f'ing name after it.
And the CE, BCE thing is what started the debate in the letter I was talking about earlier. And I agree, as a fellow athiest, who cares? Really. Who gives a crap? AD, CE, whatever. AFAIC, it's just 2009.

I definitely did not know that. But I definitely also passed grade 3.

Can anyone figure out what this rehab is on? It doesn't even make sense. Someone here said these things sole purpose is too make people angry and this is the perfect example.
Welcome, burglars
Driving into my community Tuesday at the end of the work day, I could identify which of my neighbours was home during the day. It was garbage pickup day and all of our lovely blue boxes were sitting out in front of each yard like a beacon in the night to potential thieves. The criminal element in this city must think they've died and gone to heaven. And if that isn't accommodating enough for them, we solicitously provide them with the address on the side of the bin if they are at all in doubt about which house is safe to target. Oh well, I guess thievery is another form of recycling.

Fotze, I usually have a bit of respect for your posts, but these blue boxes are an eyesore. Are you suggesting that people who oppose the bronco box program should be on rehab? This is a poorly designed program that's sure to cost us more down the road. We're taxed for the program even though many of us took the time and effort to recycle stuff diligently.

Heh. Can't please everyone, I guess. Either our recycling program is "30 years behind the times", or else, the boxes are "eyesores" and "beacons in the night to potential thieves".
Oh well. At least we don't have real problems like in the states. I hear their president uses dijon mustard.

You mean freedom mustard?
Anyway. Garbage is an eyesore. Blue boxes are a once a week inconvenience.

Irregardless of the program or the blue boxes, it is a pretty dumb letter. I mean come on, the address written on the box means the break-and-enter crowd are going to be doing more breaking and entering?
My address is written on the box. It's also on display in fading brass numbers beside my front door, and the phone company just delivered a big book with tens of thousands of private addresses, and they included personal private names and phone numbers in black and white for any criminal to see!

The boxes are an eyesore, but I don't think they will contribute much to break ins.
One unintended consequence that the city DID NOT think of, in my opinion, was the issue of bums, hobos, and transients. I've seen several of these filthy beggars canvasing the neighborhood near downtown, looking inside each of these for empty bottles, their creaky old shopping cart in tow..
It won't be long before some drifter walks by and scares granny out doing her gardening. Then we'll get complaints about too many vagrants trespassing on private property and scaring up the neighbors good.

Heh. It made me think for about 1 second that perhaps I should brush up on my religious knowledge. But then I decided I've made it this far knowing what I know (not much), so really, why bother?

No, what Kathy is worrying about is that the burglars will wait until the blue box is emptied, then they will sit and wait inside the empty blue box until they're wheeled back inside, and then they'll strike. Those crafty, crafty burglars.

I have no excuses. Oh and I better phone Mrs. Impaler and tell her to pull in the recycling bin... or at least load the shotgun.

While that letter to the editor is pretty bad, the crowing achievement likely goes to one in the Lethbridge Herald. The woman asks "Can't the city do something?" about the sun being in her eyes as she drives up the westside hill. My wife and I still make fun of that...but then again if Mr. Burns could block the sun, why can't Lethbridge?
