I've seen people plant them as close as 1'. I'd give it at least 2', more like 3' if you can spare it. The mature spread will be up to 6', but likely more like 4'.

It should be its maximum branch radius from the fence at minimum. Check with your nursery, or someplace online to find that out. IIRC it is about 3 feet.

My understanding is the best time of year to plant trees is right now. The tree is likely still somewhat dormant so it won't be shocked by the move.

If the tree is dormant, you should be OK. If it has leaves, you may want to wait until after frost. Also, don't buy any tree that has been kept indoors by the merchant.

We'd like to plant a tree in our front yard (south facing, lots of sun) and have tentatively settled on the Amur Maple. Sunnyside had a bunch last year in tree form and they are quite nice. A little research has revealed that the Amur is probably hardy enough for our climate here in Calgary, and I assume that Sunnyside wouldn't sell them if that was not the case.

Does anyone have any experience with the Amur Maple or any insight as to how they fare here?

Thanks.

EDIT: Not familiar with maples that much myself. Don't assume that it is within zone just because it is sold at Sunnyside, as they sell some out of zone stuff. But it looks to be zone 2, so you should be OK.

Heads up if this is a newer community place a 2 foot length of weeping tile around the tree so the rabbits do not eat the bark and kill it. I replaced the tree in the front of my house twice because of the rabbits. They tend to prefer saplings.

Columnar Aspens are like weeds. I bought a three foot twig three summers ago and it is about 12 feet hight this spring.

Now I am reading that Amur Maples are sensitive to Chinook winds. It may be the type of tree that does OK in Calgary in a sheltered spot, but not in a spot that gets a lot of wind or goes through a lot of melt/frost cycles. You may want to do some more research.
