Keep you in mind for the future. Do you only do pressure treated lumber or are you able to sell regular 2x4's as well?
Can do!

If you are building a deck with pressure treated lumber, ask the hardware guys for the proper screws. There was a problem with the PT lumber actually corroding screws very quickly (like just a few years) because the PT process was changed and the chemicals reacted poorly to a certain common type of metal that screws are made of...........I will try and find a source.

Just make sure to call before you dig. This guy was installing a fence too. He hit a high pressure gas line. Those were homes...they never found his body.

No need to find a source, you are correct. They have switched the PT from using arsenic to now having a copper.

DO NOT use the yellow zink coated screws (as screws will rust very quickly like mentioned above) and now only use the green/brown coated ones (thick coated not the see threw crap ones). Also if using Cedar rather the PT it's best to go out and buy stainless steel screws

Stainless steel screws are unfathomably expensive and I found them to be easily overtorqued (bent/twisted.)

Bumping this thread, as I'm looking for someone to do both deck and fence at my house.

Please PM me if you can refer someone.

Thanks.

First, let me say that I joined this community because I'm a huge flames fan, but this seems like a good thread to plug my company. I use to fix up starter homes and always had problems finding good subtrades. So I started a website to help homeowners find top Calgary contractors. Visit www.RenoLink.ca and check out the landscapers section. You can read profiles of the companies, consumer reviews and look at photos of their work. You can also get free online estimates.

sorry but got a few newb questions: can I get a company to come and dig and install the fence posts? along with that, will they ensure my property line is marker correctly? or do i have to do that on my own? Does the company supply the lumber and concrete or do I source that out myself? Any recommendations on companies to do the install of fence posts?

Thanks FlamingC. That's why i love CP, so much knowledge.

you will have to get a surveyor out to locate your property markers and mark out the actual property line....and then call the line locater to come out and mark the utilities
Does your yard have access for a small bobcat? If so, its a piece of cake...get everything located and call pretty much any bobcat operator. They will come in and auger the holes, drop and cement the posts. Probably better if you supply the materials, just buy everything at home depot or the like, get it delivered, they will drop everything in front of your house...

Yep, but is recommended for Cedar. torque is a feel thing, not an issue after a bit.

You can use hot dipped galvanized for cedar but stainless steel is the best choice and I don't understand why one would want to cut corners here

When you find a contractor, best to ask them. If they are an all around contractor then I don't think it would matter. If they specialize in decks and fences like I do then odds are they get a lower rate at the lumber yard they buy from.... very doubtful you'll beat that cost and it'll end up costing you more (the longer the linear foot your fence is the more it'll add up)

slightly off topic, but my Dad and a friend replaced the railing on our deck (previously wide horizontal rods = easy for our 2yr. old daughter to fall off) with a whole stack of pressure treated 2x2's. The new railing is great (safety wise), but it desperately needs to be sanded (I have a funny feeling this would have been much more efficient if done BEFORE installing the 2x2's as a railing) and then painted.

Any advice for sanding / painting pressure treated wood? Any recommendations for a contractor for someone who feels too lazy to do it themselves?

Thanks!

Any suggestions on surveyor companies to use or even the name of one? (Sorry again for the newb questions).

my property is easily accessible so getting a bobcat in should be no problem.

Sorry to bring this post again. I just got a quote fro $35 for 6 feet fence with 4x4 post and pressured treated wood. Is this a reasonable rate in Calgary. My fence total length is 110 feet

Thanks

Do not watch Decked Out on HGTV otherwise you deck and fence costs will sky rocket! That guy and his team do some amazing things and now a simple deck just won't cut it for me.

So you're talking $4042.50 including GST? That may be the going rate, but I sure the hell wouldn't pay it.
