My bigger question mark was whether we should allow players released this year to sign with any teams at all, even for one year. I think it lowers the value of rentals at the deadline if playoff teams know they can sit in the weeds and just wait for some overpaid, but still useful players to be released.
So my thought process for next year was to just make these guys sit on the sidelines until the off-season.

I agree with Syl... realistically these guys wouldn't be signing a multi-year deal with anybody right now, and especially not with a non-playoff team. Maybe they could sign for more in the summer or maybe not, it's debatable, but it's certainly worth it for them to wait and see. At most they would sign a 1 year deal right now.
And you've both you and Syl pointed out that indirectly, these buyouts could decrease trading if everyone knows they're coming every April. There was almost no market for a low 70's vet as it was.
