red light/green light cameras

I drive by the 10th street, 16th ave intersection every morning and that red light camera flashes all the time, without cars in the intersection. I think it's broken.

Theres both the strobe detectors and traffic cameras that monitor flow.

There are 3 things being talked about now.


1) The red light/speed camera's - they are in a large grey steel box on a long grey pole a few meters before the intersection they are monitoring.

2) The emergency personnel light changer things - these are little knobby looking things on the top of some street lights, they pick up on a strobe light effect from a coming emergency vehicle and change the light to green and all other lights to red.

3) Traffic cameras - these are normal looking cameras usually on the top of really long poles on the top of street light poles, the city has been installing more and more cameras around the city that watch for build-ups of traffic and then change the frequency of red/green lights to help best suit that traffic.

I think its awesome how as a recession is hitting the city steps up its revenue generating practices by about 10X. Its like living in a police state, except the police are worse than the criminals!
