Less fast/junk food.....more meats, vegetables and fruits. Or in other words, just stay away from refined carbs. Those are the real killers in any 'diet.' You can get plenty of 'good' carbs from whole wheat sources, fruits and vegetables.
They just finished a 5 year study in the UK, where they had people on low/high diets, all interchanged with low carb, high carb, low fat, high fat, normal protein, high protein.....in the end, everyone lost weight exactly the same. Why? Because they were all eating a restricted amount of calories, 1800-2000 I believe. Of course, that is just a general number, but the idea itself is what people have been trying to tell the stupid government and the morons they hire to make the 'nutrition guide' for years.
Its not about WHAT you eat, assuming you don't gouge on junk food, but get healthy meals, and lots of fruits and vegetables. Its about how MUCH you eat.
Our whole society in general has become less active. We have machines that do the work humans had to do years ago, so there is a lot of sitting around while the work is being done. As a result of our inactivity, we gain weight. If you're smart and responsible, you adapt, learn to eat better, and find time to exercise. If you're not smart and responsible, or if you just don't give a crap about your health and well-being, you stay fat and obese, and blame ADHD, or some other fat-ass syndrome for making you fat. And then you sucker the government into funding your study so you can PROVE that we're not really lazy, we get fat because we have ADHD.
Because the number of ADHD patients apparently just increased ten-fold based on this study, and it is going to keep increasing until 80% of the people in North America have ADHD. Considering that obesity rates are shooting through the ceiling, and people think banning transfats and soda in schools is going to solve it, when the real problem is kids being less active.
Just in case nobody 'noticed'.....we've been drinking milk, eating fast food, junk food.....as kids, for decades. Most of us grew UP that way. None of us were ever fat because we were ACTIVE. We played outside, and as a direct result, we burned calories.
Calories make us fat. Not ADHD, not carbs, not fat, and certainly not protein. You burn more calories by being active.....you have less of a chance at gaining weight. IIRC, you work in the construction industry 4x4. Walk around any construction site. How many people who actually have to be active during their job are overweight? How many are obese? A very small percentage. Because they BURN a lot of calories.
During the fires in California last year(I think last year).....firefighters were eating up to 10,000 calories per day, just to have enough energy left to finish their shift. Micheal Phelps apparently eats 10,000 calories per day. I know a few 20 year old powerlifters that eat 10,000 calories per day. What do they all have in common? They burn an insane amount of calories each day. But, if we're inactive, lazy.....etc, etc, we can't afford to even eat 3,500 calories per day.
'Findings' like this piss me off. Is there anyone seriously stupid enough to believe that ADHD is the reason people are obese?
Also, I might be confusing some people when I say carbs don't make people fat, but I tell them to stay away from 'refined carbs.' Well, usually refined carbs have an insane amount of calories, lots of sugar, high in sodium, etc, etc....but nothing of REAL nutritional value. So you're just shooting yourself in the foot by having them as a part of your 'diet.'
The poster who said up above that having healthy food around is the best idea, because people don't get fat off of carrots and celery....is right. Generally, we don't gouge on healthy food. And even if we do, you have to eat a LOT of carrots in order to eat the same amount of calories that you get from eating a LOT of chocolate bars.
We're going to hopefully see a major shift in the 'nutritional guide' from the 60% carbs they recommend now(seriously how long does the government have to wait before they change their stupid guide)....and towards a lower carb, higher fat, even higher protein diet.
