Nice to meet someone else who's done the trek... 1994 definitely would have been an interesting time to be over there. I went to the Rwandan Genocide memorial, that was still probably happening around the time you went.

I was interpreting stability as political.
My mistake, it was 1996. OT, but my sister and BIL worked in a refugee camp in Rwanda for 2 years.
You see, that's what I didn't get. Not saying it doesn't happen. We basically lived in a tent for a year and had no issues (except for one attempted theft) at all. In fact I would go as far as saying they were some of the most genuine nicest people I ever met. Heard stories of other folks that did have problems.
The most unsafe I ever felt was South Africa and that was mostly Joburg. I never felt threatened in Cape Town once. Nairobi, I felt was ok, just had to keep your wits about you more, same with Dar es Salaam.
