Given the choice between the unions taking pay cuts and losing their jobs I have a hard time believing the unions are that bull headed that they won't take a pay cut. I am sure they are just playing hard ball and delaying the inevitable pay cuts.

Is that it?
13 plants? In all of Canada?
How many employees at those plants?

Good toss them out and take over the plants. Build a Canadian version of some of those low priced Eastern Euro cars. Take a couple of them and use the profits from taking over the bottom end market to design the next generation eco-friendly to the max vehicle and let's get ahead of the game.

Canada would run that company right into the ground, or worse, into the pockets of taxpayers repeatedly. If the CAW/UAW can run juggernauts like GM into the ground, imagine what they'd do to some upstart. If they weren't involved in the process, then why should GM/Ford/Chrysler be tied to that cashflow-killing dinosaur?
Chrysler is absolutely right. GM and Ford should jump on this bandwagon right away. There is absolutely no reason auto workers should be reeling in a compensation package worth over $75/hr, especially if foreign rivals are "breaking even" at a total package closer to $50/hr.
Frankly, the difference in craftsmanship between a North American built vehicle (this means Toyota too), and one built in Europe/Japan is palpable. While some people might say its not fair to compare a BMW to a Canadian built Toyota or Pontiac, their sticker prices have become comparable and door rattles/superficial issues are no longer acceptable to the consumer. Note that BMW isn't losing money.

No they wouldn't. Run it on the Westjet model and they wouldn't be dealing with the CAW to begin with.
Cheap no frills cars cranking off the assembly line. R&D being done to jump ahead to the next gen car. It's a winner.

So then the question is, why should "Westcar" get to be non-union, and GM/Ford/Chrysler be forced to deal with the extortion team at CAW?
Take the unions out and the Big 3 are likely winners too.
Unfortunately, an Ontario-based car company gives me visions of Air Canada, Via Rail and Bombardier... not Westjet.

I think we should take over the factories and build tanks and armoured personal carriers.

Fine not a problem. We take the plants apart bolt by bolt and ship them out to Alberta. Just the kind of make work project needed at the moment.

I like it, but not only would the central government find a way to quash it, we'd have a labor shortage that would be the stuff of legends by the time it all gets set up.
I think the Governments of Canada and Ontario need to work with the Big 3, and should facilitate the elimination of the CAW for the betterment of their citizens. (File it under "will never happen," since Harper is under hostage by socialists, and Ontario is pretty red)

Err...I'm fine. I just thought that maybe something happened back in 2006 with Chrysler and their unions.
I'm still doubtful that Chrysler will pull out and call me cynical but I'm sure us taxpayers will help Chrysler out someway or another.

This is actually a great idea. If the logistics are reasonable, this would be an example of useful stimulus that would benefit us down the road.
