Sure it is. I1, I2 and I3 are just below SI2.
Most jewelry shops don't sell anything below SI though because if you're in the I range you can see the flaws with the naked eye.

edit: I just looked up on wikipedia - i guess if you use the CIBJO scale instead of the GIA scale, it would be P instead of I but those lower end grades are still there.

"I" is "included", as in it has inclusions visible to the naked eye. You can buy lots of I diamonds in Calgary - they're usually used for earrings. Once you get to VS2 and above, any inclusions are not supposed to be visible to the eye from the "top" of the diamond.

Perhaps, theoretically, but would the average person notice them? Especially considering that most people are going to get either a .25 second glance at it as you walk past them on the street or stand in line or something like that, or maybe a 20 second look at it as friends type of thing. Unless you are in the subset where the ring has to be the biggest, clearest, best cut, best colour etc (not saying there is anything wrong with that, it works for some people). I guess its for me, all things considered - from what the person you are buying for likes, your practical context/limitations (price range, time available to shop around, etc...), etc - you just have to balance the best that you have.

Bought my wife's engagment ring on Blue Nile in September 2007 and think they are fantastic -- cost-wise, I found them to be about one-half to one-third of the cost of retail diamond stores, and the stone was delivered the next day (fully insured, of course).

Like most guys, I had a $$$ limit... and Blue Nile will allow you to get an amazing stone for your dollar, especially if you've already looked around at Spence, Birks, etc. I highly recommend them.

A bunch of girls at my work were comparing/talking rings today and I couldn't believe the costs. One girl is looking at a 30K ring, and another was wearing an 80K ring.
I can't believe anyone would spend that kind of money on a ring.
Be glad your girls are reasonable.

I've seen some horrible inclusions, yes. "I" diamonds usually have a pretty big "bubble" in them.

Note that SI2 diamonds don't cost much more. Cut, clarity (above G), and carat "steps" (e.g. .50, .75, 1.0), that's what you pay for.

No offence, but its a little feminine for you isn't it?

I think it looks nice, but I know nothing about these things!

From talking to my wife and various female friends the #1 thing men fail to consider when purchasing an engagement (or any other ring) that the person is going to wear 24/7 is where they work. (well besides the my god he just doesn't know my taste complaint)

If she works a job that requires latex gloves and she's putting them on and taking them off all the time you may want to consider a stone that is sunk into the band. A stone sitting above the band can be a pain.

If she works a job where hands are bumping on door frames or desks etc, a stone sitting too high can be a pain...and no matter how good the diamond it can chip and you'll be replacing diamonds a few times.

You get the idea.

Not my style, but it looks good. price is really good, you couldn't get that in a mall, or at Spence at that price. A Co-worker did the Blue Nile thing, and had no problems with the service. Great price for a stone.

Spence Diamonds can suck my left testicle. Bought the Fiances ring there, gave it to her, and then she went to have it resized. We are STILL waiting to get the ring back now after 4 weeks. You can imagine how happy the fiance is.

Has anyone had the ring that they purchased from Blue Nile appraised anywhere to verify the value?

Spending that much money on something that is essentially useless is hardly reasonable. I didn't have a job or money when I got married. My wife picked out her own ring and paid for mine as well. I gave her the money back later on. We spent very little on them and frankly I could care less if I even had the dumb thing. We were saving money to pay off our school bills and for a downpayment on a house. Regardless we never would have blown money on some stupid ring.

I have never understood the whole keep up with the Jones's thing and it still seems to me like holding up a sign that says "Look I'm a shallow dufus who needs to waste money on superficial crap to make people think I amount to something".

So reasonable? I'm glad I married an intelligent woman who had her priorities straight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Took mine to Calgary Jewelry Store (the one on 17th). The lady inspecting the diamond almost dropped my wife's ring when she heard how much we paid for it.

How much did you pay for it? How much was it worth?

I didn't get it appraised per se. We came in to get a matching wedding ring. The lady offered to take a look at the diamond after I told her we got it at Blue Nile.

We paid less than half of what she said they would sell it for.

In general, I found that Calgary diamond prices were a complete ripoff.

Turns out that he's aware that I want to punch him in the face.
