I was reading another site later on last night. Reading the earlier posts, around the time of the first mention of Jokinen trade, one person asked if there was any confirmation and someone else said, "CP is down, it must be true". I had a good laugh over that.

I was able to get on CP earlier in the day, maybe a few hours before the actual deadline, and I was really surprised. I clicked on a link and it timed out and I wasn't able to get onto CP at all until much later last night. I am never able to get on CP on deadline day. I am beginning to think conspiracy...

I have so many threads to read through now to catch up.

... I am glad though the server held up for everyone for the most part.

I assume your internet provider has a deal with TSN where all hockey related bandwidth contain 40% leafs content.

Photon made a great point in another thread regarding the potential for migrating to "the cloud" if capacity becomes a regular issue. Amazon EC2, Cloudfront, and S3 would be an easy way to provide additional capacity when necessary. In fact, they were designed to solve exactly the issue that we're dealing with now. Unfortunately, they are also pay per use, which makes it difficult to predict and control expenses.

It would be interesting to look at the current disk and bandwidth usage on CP and get a rough estimate on what it would cost on Amazon Web Services. I would be really curious to know how it compares to our current setup...

Does the forum software allow a read-only setting, or a static-html-generation setting that could be switched on just for the couple of hours of absolute-peak-requests leaving cetain people to post updates? A bit rubbish, but everyone gets served _something_, rather than an unresponsive server ...

Nothing like that unfortunately, could be a good idea for a plugin though.

BTW I haven't heard anything back from the DNS guys, and I kinda forgot about it again. I'll try to remember to send them another email.

gotta admit, i have the forums bookmarked, and dont go to the static site unless theres a link to a game writeup or something. and i have never noticed anything too visible in the forums for donations.

now that i know its there, i just donated 10 bucks. assuming we don't lose our team to abbottsford, i am happy to donate to a site that i spend so much time on!

- winning the big shiny thing
- a major deal on trade deadline
- a major signing on July 1st

I guess I'm in-line with Chachi - doesn't seem like enough reason to pile more money into thing just to deal with what are very rare situation.
I will be too busy crying to post on CP. It would just look like this: ah ud foaj fas hfa dsou fjaso fi ha ds fhfa.

I gotta admit I never noticed the Donations thing until it was mentioned in a thread one time. I have made a couple donations, and for the time I am on here I should probably give more.

Is there anywhere you can fit it in the main forum screen so more members see it? I am not to sure if Bingo does this site for a profit or just to keep it going but the more donations means more money to spend on stuff like this.

I would probably donate more if it was on the forum pages because personally when I go to CP I go through forum.calgarypuck.com everytime. I just never see it to remind me to do so.

Just a thought.

edit: I'd even say put it where the weather is, unless you guys get paid on that. Maybe below it?

Lol yeah.. users went up a few hundred people in about 20 seconds, and an automated housekeeping process kicked in as well to make it fun.

Lol..

Really though if we go deep in the playoffs this will become more common.

Still talking with teamchachi as to what our options are.

Could do some upgrades to the current sever, but to upgrade the CPUs would be $1000 at least.

Could add a 2nd server, but then that's another server fund drive, when the last one isn't too long ago. Plus added cost per month for a 2nd server.

Why don't you guys try a Playoff donation drive to upgrade it by then? Then at least you are set for Trade deadlines, July 1st, big games and the few cups the Flames will win over the next few years

$1000 over how many members? Try and get $5 from 200 people and that would cover it. I am sure we could find 200 CP regulars that can afford $5 for the time spent on here. Even a starving student could afford that little of a donation.

Is it cheaper to own your own server(s) and pay to have them co-located rather than paying for a dedicated server and hosting with one of the larger companies?

In general it's more expensive up front, but cheaper long term to own your own server.

That may have changed lately though, so I'm doing some research now, it's been a few years since I've looked into stuff.

There seems to be hosts specializing in the forum software as well which is new, so checking out those avenues too.

Yeah always a possibility, but have to make sure it's the right thing to do.

There are occasionally some great deals on dedicated servers to be had. But generally it is more expensive in the long run. However, it does have the advantage of spread out the capital outlay over time. Pay $250/month for a dedicated server is a bit easier than shelling out $2500 for the server and then $100/month for colocation.

Thats $3700 after year one for the colocation option and $3000 for a dedicated server. That changes to $4900 & $6000 after year two, and then $6000 & $9000 after year three.

The advantage to the dedicated server is that you're usually paying monthly, so you can move to another server quickly if the technology advances, your host starts sucking, or your need something more powerful. When you own the server you're kind of stuck with it, unless you can find somebody that wants to buy it...

The other advantage to the dedicated server is the fact that you aren't on the hook for hardware repairs.

The final advantage comes at the three year mark when servers are usually worn out. Yes, you come out $3000 ahead (using my example numbers) with ownership, but now you've gotta buy another server to replace the one that just wore out!
