IF they were racial profiling, I'd have a big problem with it.

But I'm cute and Asian and always look away from cops and I've never been checked for a ticket on the C-Train ever!

Was she at the one by the Crack Macs because they take no prisoners at that station....or rather...they do indeed take prisoners apparently.
I think racial profiling might be erring on the side of raging hyperbole. Then again, they might have been concerned about the crazy black woman who was looking a little twitchy around transit cops and who was standing there obviously seething with rage prepared to kill the first thing she sees.

Can't anyone make an arrest? Citizen's arrest?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen's_arrest
A citizen's arrest is an arrest made by a person who is not acting as a sworn law enforcement official.[1] In common law jurisdictions, the practice dates back to medievalEngland and the English common law, when sheriffs encouraged ordinary citizens to help apprehend law breakers.
Canada
Section 494. (Criminal Code)[6]
(1) ARREST WITHOUT WARRANT BY ANY PERSON
Any one may arrest without warrant
(a) a person whom he finds committing an indictable offence; or
(b) a person who, on resonable grounds, he believes
(i) has committed a criminal offence, and
(ii) is escaping from and freshly pursued by persons who have lawful authority to arrest that person

How can the cops arrest her on the platform?
You dont need a ticket to stand on the platform. Her story seems suspsect IMO.
If she is telling the truth, that she was arrested on the platform, then her story holds weight IMO. Also, suspect profiling isnt accomplished properly by cops with 30 years of expierience and making 3X as much, I dont trust transit constables to do it.

Yes you do. The signage is clear, the platform is a 'fare paid zone.'

Technically, yes you do (at most stations at least). Notice those signs before you enter the platform that says that you are entering a paid fare zone - meaning you have to have a valid paid fare to go beyond that point?

Even downtown?
When I was here 6 years ago I worked downtown and lived in the NW, I would wait on the platforum until the train arrived, then get my ticket to maximize the time.
The whole 8 months I was here I was only searched by cops 6 times, and every time was either downtown to Sunnyside, or Northtown mall to Banff Trail.
Guess you learn somethign everyday.
If thats the case and they didnt ask anyone else for tickets, then she might have a beef.

^^ downtown is a free fare zone. It is different.
It could really be as simple as she knew she didn't have her transfer, saw the transit cops and started looking panicky. Shame she's blaming it was racial. It would be a lot easier to feel bad for her if she wasn't breaking a law.
I'm not sure why it's never occurred to me that they can arrest people. I'm sure they see some pretty dangerous characters from time to time.

Again, read the signage. Downtown (7th ave) is a "Free fare zone".
You don't have to pay to ride the train downtown, ergo, you don't a need pass to be on the platform.
Edit: Damn, beaten

As stated, they aren't 'arresting' you, they are detaining you for the police.
What would bethe offense they are detaining you for? Trespass?
