A girl from my school was on the flight, so sad. Prayers and thoughts to her family and all the families affected. I take this flight to Buffalo quite often, very scary.

I also believe a lot of the issues SAS had with the Q400 was a result of their own maintenance on the aircraft.
I've listened to the live ATC feed at the time that this flight was on approach and then went missing. Other aircraft were reporting rime icing, which isn't the worst type of icing to encounter, and usually can be shed fairly easily by the deicing 'boots' on the Q400.
Perhaps this may be similar to what occured to American Eagle flight 4184 on October 31, 1994. The turboprop in that case was an ATR-72:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Eagle_Flight_4184
Edit: I wouldn't worry too much about this being a turboprop. The Q400 is a fast plane and on shorter segments is usually just as fast as flying with a jet on the route. The publics stigma about turboprops is really confusing to me, it is in essence the same type of engine as a regular jet, but with a propeller in front.

No, it's ironic.
She was on the flight to attend a party to celebrate her late husband's 50th birthday party.
So she was going to attend something due to her husband being killed by planes crashing, and ended up being killed by a crashing plane as well.

No, it's still only coincidence. I am fairly certain that her husband's 50th birthday, real or imagined, would still have occurred whether or not he died in 9-11.
Irony would be if she died in a plane crash while flying somewhere to celebrate an airline safety record.

I was so tempted to respond to this thread with "and in other news, Canadian terrorists were responsible for the plane crash on the Hudson" after I read in the related story that Canada Geese brought that plane down.

I take one of those weekly to Prince Rupert for work and I'm not sure if anyone here has been to Prince Rupert in the winter, but we've landed in some pretty sketchy weather.
White knuckled rides every time, you can count on it.

I never used to be scared of flying... I actually loved it. Belive it or not, a plane I was in going to Boston, MA was once hit by lightning and I thought it was the greatest thing...
Then I was travelling back from India with the family and we took off in the middle of a storm... the plane kept falling 200 feet at a time and I honestly thought I was going to die. The plane ended up landing ok in our final destination; but mentally I have never been the same since when it comes to flying.

There's an easy way to get over that fear...flight training.

And in other news a British Airways BAE-146 just landed at London City airport and had its nose gear collapse. Everyone is ok.

You should be about as worried as you are about airplanes crashing into your house.
Both are extremely, extremely, extremely unlikely.

"Gary Niewood on Saxaphone"
I've heard that phrase many times, as the live "Concert in Central Park" by Simon and Garfunkel is one of my favourites albums. I've listened to it many times since I was a kid. Mr. Niewood was on the flight.
