Berkowitz killed people because he said his neighbor's dog told him to. Is that the fault of dogs, or the mental disease he suffers from? The guy was mentally unbalanced, regardless of religious beliefs. The last time I checked, my minister wasn't telling people to chop kids heads off, so please leave religion out of it.

The boy's mother, who is the suspect’s wife, underwent surgery at a hospital for lacerations to her hand. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening, Long said. The boy was not enrolled in the city's public school system, according to the school division.

A page on the social networking site MySpace that apparently belongs to Hagerman shows his photo and is private. But it does show his “status” - “Jesus Freak in the mood for ice cream" - and a quote: “Schizophrenia can't hold me down, Thank God for Jesus!"

Another MySpace page apparently belonging to his wife says, "God's love never changes.....His love never fails" and has a photo of Joshua.

"I believe my son knew that tonight was his night and if I didn't do something the anti-Christ would have took his soul tonight," said Joseph, "I just feel like the message that God wanted me to tell was that the anti-christ is here right now. If thats God's purpose for me, then thats God's purpose."

Hagerman says it was his mission to kill his son, even though his wife, Shirley, begged him not to.

"I did hurt my wife," he said. "She was saying 'no, no, no.' "

Honestly? Are you schizo, do you have voices in your head? No, its great to judge this guy from the position of perfect mental health, but you don't know anything about this guys situation besides the whole oh noes religion is bad and god has a plan that involves the decapitation of children.

This guy was sick no question, but last I saw he obviously didn't understand god or his religion at all. You know, breaking the whole 10 commandments and all.

Well, unless they are Jews or Muslims, but they are not really people.

But this guy is CLEARLY saying God told him to do it, so it is somewhat fair to bash religion here. If he was an atheist would the outcome be any different? Probably not, but he is somewhat trying to justify his actions through religion.

Another quote from the bottom of the article:

If this person did, in fact, suffer from Schizophrenia, I think it's ridiculous to lay the blame for this at the feet of religion and not a crushingly debilitating mental disorder.

Quite clearly this guy was unstable in more ways than he simply worshipped God. In some ways it's like people that say video games cause people to go out and kill hookers. The guy obviously had mental issues (Schizophrenia).

ROFLAMO! I'm surprised it took this long for someone to start in with the bashing of religion. Equating religion to a clear case of mental illness is laughable. It apears they guy was suffering from schizophrenia as his myspace has a quote saying.......“Schizophrenia can't hold me down, Thank God for Jesus!"

Thats akin to the argument that all of Islam is evil because a few wack jobs like to strap bombs on their chest and blow up supermarkets.

Please show me proof that god actually physically talks to people?

The lessons come through text in theory, and one of the first things you see is "Thou shalt not kill"

The guy was disturbed and ill, and thats his justification, not his religion that would in no way condon his actions, and not god if he exists.

Not it's not fair to bash relgion. God didn't tell this guy to kill his son, his mentally disturbed mind did. I had a friend just out of HS that was schizophrenic who often heard voices in his head. He ended up going downtown and jumping off the Bay parkade and splattering himself on the cars below. He was on his way to the hospital because his meds were were out of wack and the voices in his head were making it hard to discern reality from his illness. We suspect the voices in his head told him to jump.

If he said the yogurt in his fridge told him to do it, would we be slamming yogurt and the people who eat it???? The guy is mentally unbalanced, that has nothing to do with God or religion.
