You've obviously never listened to Radiohead. They can be extremely fast, heavy, and fun, especially live.

Radiohead tend to avoid these types of events like the plague (due to some sort of artsy anti-commercialism mumbo jumbo), so it should be interesting to see what they do.
a quote from The Roots after watching rehearsal....
"haaaaaaaa! thom yorke is jammin! he dancin like a muppet on acid. i love it. how he got more soul than 10 of post modern rnb artists?"
- On Saturday night, the Roots' Questo tweets about the Radiohead lead singer busting moves at an LA Grammy party.
should be interesting
|
Actually, they don't avoid it. They weren't asked when they've been nominated in the past because the execs thought they'd be a ratings killer. EDIT: The article contradicts this. I was going off of the fact that they weren't asked right after OK Computer because they'd be ratings killers.
I hate the Grammys but I'll watch this.
Lol at the Questo quote. Talk about a band with soul, the Roots are amazing.

He probably listens to shredders like Joe Satriani.
Anyways, I'm sure there were people who thought the Beatles sucked back when they were around too. Obviously they were wrong. Radiohead's music will stand the test of time as well.

Yeah definitely. I think every Radiohead thread should come with a disclaimer "Just because you heard No Surprises, Creep, and Karma Police on the radio doesn't mean you can comment on how sad and slow they are."
What most people I've found hate about Radiohead is they will take what they do and themselves seriously when making albums and a lot of people hate that. The band has a strong artistic drive that they don't apologize for, which a lot of people find pretentious. I find it refreshing.
Also, a lot Radiohead's songs are meant to be ironic. When asked about the lyric in the song The Bends 'I wish it was the sixties', Thom Yorke said "no i don't ****ing wish it was the sixties" but they are purposefully vague and subtle about that fact because they feel like people should be able to figure that out by themselves. Yorke is a bit of **** like that.

Thing about Radiohead is that it is pretty crappy in my opinion. But to each his own. What really bothers me is all their self righteous, jerk-off, wannabe fans that think that because they listen to Radiohead that they are somehow more enlightened than the rest of society and that they are smarter etc. Not saying any CPers who are Radiohead fans are like this, I mean people I've met in person.
Sort of like how Troutman (i think it was) described Tool fans a while back. Although I am a Tool fan and don't know any of the Tool fans that Trout was describing.

You may find them boring, you may find them slow, but to call Radiohead bland is just crazy. They have produced one of the most interesting and complex bodies of work of any band or artist during the last 20 years.

Coldplay was performing a perfectly good song until Jay-Z came in and ruined it.
(and I usually don't mind Jay-Z)

I agree with you to a certain extent. Radiohead do seem to attract and/or induce a lot of elitism from their fans. They just seem to be one of those cultural touchstones. Those who love them, live them, and can't understand anyone that doesn't 'get' it.
This in turn seems to inspire a backlash for all things Radiohead from those outside this group - who don't 'get' it, or more probably, don't want to get it - A backlash that is probably unfair to the band itself.
But what can you do? Music is and will always be one of the preeminent sites for this type of commodification and negotiation of cultural capital.

Wow... 1st response to the OP!
Usually when someone makes a thread on this forum about a particular music artist I give the over/under at 5 posts 'til the first irrelevant, condescending 'opinion' about that artist is registered. You did it right away! Good on you for defying the odds Flames_Gimp!
I'm looking forward to hearing them. It completely slipped my mind they were playing... I really like 'In Rainbows'. I don't think it's their best music but certainly their most accessible in a while. Should translate really well on stage.

It takes a couple listens. I was skeptical at first too. Radiohead's music doesn't sound familiar on first listens, so it's hard to know how to listen to it until you've gone through a few times. If that makes any sense.
