That's crazy, I would never have imagined something like that happening. I usually don't clean the snow off the top of my van, because I can't reach it, but it usually just slides down my own windshield when I stop. I wouldn't have thought of the ice forming so it was like a huge chunk.
Glad nobody was hurt.

It sort of is the kind of thing that is easy to not think about... If you can't see it, you're not really thinking about it. Just like rocks in a dually. Ever had one of those shot at you? If you have, you're probably part of the club that actually looks carefully at the back wheels of any dually in front of you.

Actually, ever since I read your original rant about this I personally have always brushed off my ride. Now I also notice others who don't, and get mad. Thanks for a new level of road rage!

Holy Crap! I'm glad everyone is ok!
I made sure everyone at work saw the pic! Always keep your head up on Glenmore west of 14 Street when you drive through 2 golf courses. A stray golf ball is sure to give you a heart attack. It did to me!

I'm not sure what the ruling is for rocks. But after talking to the police, (the officer called about an hour ago) ice on your roof is your responsibility. She is liable for the damages. He asked if I want to charge her, but I declined, I just want the damages fixed.
I also spoke to her again and we are going to go the insurance route just for simplicity. I have to rent a car for a few days, need a new windshield, body work to the roof and need the inside detailed as there are tiny shards of glass everywhere. This will be a hefty bill and she'd rather have her insurance pay it.
Credit to her for stepping up, she told the officer she accepts 100% responsibility.

A little off topic, but I just had a case of honesty.
One of my sales associates was ringing in a price adjustment and through a mistake gave her $120 more than what she was going to get. Thankfully it was a sale where the customer had given her info (just phone number) and when I called her to explain the mistake she said she would be in on Monday to pay the $120 difference.
She could have as easily told me to "do something" to myself but said she wasn't that type of person.
Kudos to all honest people! (Myself, not always being one of them )

It's always a good idea to go through insurance. The other party can always opt to pay for the damages afterwards rather than the insurance company and they'll arrange everything for you and should guarantee any repairs. Whereas if you just trust the other person you take on a lot of risk that you shouldn't have to. Still it always sucks to have your vehicle damaged, especially when it's not your fault.

And this is why in the state of PA you can be ticketed/fined if you drive without completely cleaning your vehicle off. It's a pain in the ass first thing in the morning, when it's just a dusting-inch of snow, but it prevents this kind of crap from happening.

Be wary of doing direct buisness with someone in an accident. If there is no health concerns on your end and its only damage to the car then it might be ok. Althought I have heard of at least 3 incidents similar where other person says dont contact the inusrance comapny, I will handle it, in none of those situations was the outcome good.

One ton trucks with two tires on each back wheel. If you drive them off road, it's not uncommon to get a rock wedged between the two tires. And a rock that gets wedged between a dually is a f***load bigger than a pebble that gets shot out of a tire tread. Duallys will launch baseball sized rocks out behind them when they leave the trails and then get on to highway-speed roads.

I have one story from a friend where he was following a truck (I have absolutely no idea how close he was behind it) But a big chunk of ice/snow fell off UNDERNEATH the truck... damaged a fog light, part of the bumper and shredded his Alternator belt.
Don't just watch for stuff ABOVE the vehicles, watch for stuff below them too and don't follow too close.

Holy schnikey's. Totally smashed up the window, glad to hear everyone is fine and she is taking responsibility. I would never have thought someone would fess up. Good on her.
To those talking about the duallys, they are pretty bad. A rock shot up on my mom's car, about the size of a baseball and nearly smashed through the window. Luckily it didn't, because it was right at the head area, so if it went through it would have put a hole in her head. (This was on Deerfoot)

When I first saw this post I thought I had caused it. I had left home and where the car was parked it was in the shade and the ice on the roof was solid and I couldn't get it off. We took a quick drive into town and ran in the mall for a minute and then started making our way back home. I guess from being out in the sun for an hour though started to melt things and when we pulled onto the 103 it started flying off. Luckily cars were far enough behind me and slowed down when they saw it coming off.
Also, I saw a car on Hammonds Plains Rd with the windshield smashed like that too and we couldn't figure out what had happened. But I guess I know now.
I'm glad nobody in your car was hurt! It's that time of the year now that there is enough heat in the sun to cause things to start melting. So I will be taking extra care now to ensure my roof is clear.

Wow if this had been another CalPucker I'd have been shocked!
It actually happened on the 102 Highway just past Costco (Halifax inbound) just before the 103 exit.

Glad to hear you are ok HD. Would have sucked if you came back in SD.
Hmmm i don't think that would ever happen in Calgary though. Just because of the weather. i have never noticed that much ice on my roof before. The only thing that would happen in Calgary is if you don't brush off the snow it would melt and block your view of the windshields.
