GPS only receive signals they don't send them, so no one knows how fast you're going. It's a nice little warning, especially on cars that don't have cruise control, as I've looked down on more than one occasion on a long drive and said "OH FRACK I'M DOING 140!" I'm usually a 10 kmh over type guy. The sake of the little bit of time I'll make up isn't worth the ticket for me.

PS: And I like Garmin, find their guide by far the easiest to use. If my parents can figure it out and use it, anyone can

No but I can hook it up to my computer for updates. Or was there another reason to have one?

I love the search part of it so you can locate close by coffee shops, etc. It's perfect for me to find places to steal wifi driving around the city

Yeah- what happens when you fill up the memory with said updates? Being able to add a 4 GB card for less than $10 would be easier than trying to decide what maps to delete.

Oh I did not know that, well I know I can delete Quebec. Hell I'm gonna do that now

I'm pretty sure it doesn't have one but I wanted to go cheap because I will only need it for a few years until I get a new car which I will make sure has GPS.

Just to bump this thread, in case anybody else is looking Dell has one on for $50

Reviews aren't stellar, but for the couple of times per year I would use it I decided to plop down the $50.

Edit- looks like it was a typo on Dell's part and it's $100 now.

I'm looking at getting the Garmin Nuvi 550 for work. My job often involves driving driving through rural Alberta. Like most Nuvi's, the 550 comes pre-loaded with the Navteq "City Navigator NT for North America" maps. Anyone have any experience using Nuvi's off the beaten path? Do the base Navteq maps include secondary highways, Alberta grid roads and forestry roads or am I looking at buying topo maps as well?

To add on to this question, i'd also like to know if any of the GPS's have a function where you can enter a legal land description (rural) and have it maps a route for you?

I travel a lot out of town in rural areas and would like a GPS that at least has the TWP and RGE roads.

or opinions anyway... I have never owned a GPS, played with a friends and such, but never owned one. So I decided it was time on the weekend went into best buy and stared at the 20ish models and though hmmm... I think I need to research this a bit more.

Jumped on the internet and now I'm thoroughly confused... god there is a ton of info and I have no idea what to get. I just want one for city driving mostly with the odd trip, sometimes out of province.... like BC.

Anyone here have one?
Do you like it? why? why not?
Does the traffic live update option thingy work?

Thoughts?

(I did a search in tech and got no results for "GPS", so I hope this is not fata as that seems real odd)

I just bought the Garmin 1260T which has all of the North American Maps, you can also buy and upload European maps. It does have blue tooth and the receiver for traffic updats which is kind of good.

I also bought my dad the Garmin nuvu 1200 for Fathers day, it doesn't have the blue tooth or traffic update.

both are easy to use.

Garmin is a very good brand to look at

I bought a Garmin... can't remember which one, but it was a basic model. For what I needed it for, it's done the trick. I don't know South Calgary much, and it's opened up the options for my family for things to do in Edmonton, when we're up there visiting extended family.

I don't use it every moment I'm in the car, but it's handy when you're looking for a specific address.

I'm probably not using it to it's fullest potential, but I've had it for about 2 years, and it's rarely let me down.

Just re-read the thread to see what I had posted earlier. Since it was last bumped I bought an Omnitech GPS from Staples- it was on for $90 so I had to grab it.

It is hackable, so I am able to use any other map program's software on it. Having used the Garmin and the two programs on mine the other thing I would suggest is buying it somewhere that you can return/exchange it after you get it. I found one of the programs was pretty bad at telling you "turn now" the same way your drunk friends would give you directions when driving them home.

Also make sure the maps are up to date. With how new some of Calgary's streets are a 2 year old map can cause issues.

So captain do you use the traffic updates? Do they work?

Its a feature that I used when I drove down into the states with it, but I don't think it works up here.
