No, but you should be able to convince him that you already paid.

Ask him to loan you 2 months rent, but only give you one month.
Then you give him one month back.
Now he owes you one month, and you owe him one month, so you are even.

Reading some of the comments about this and people having no sympathy I thought "that's pretty harsh, he was ripped off. It happens".

Now that I've actually read the story I don't have any sympathy for him either. I mean come on buddy. How can you not see you are getting scammed here? The whole story -- it reads like he was hypnotized or something. Magic money washing fluid? Magic? Sheesh.

It is a Mennonite family I believe. That they got sucked into something like this doesn't surprise me unfortunately. Not a lot of education going on in that community.

Wow... Dudes an idiot. I just read the entire story and he is seriously a moron. Personally, if I had been a complete moron, I'm not sure I'd want it put in any newspaper, describing in detail how exactly I was complete moron.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if someone contacts this poor, idiotic fool and offers to recover his money for him... for a fee of course, some of which must be paid up front.

Geezuz...
The final cost of Rempel's mix of greed and remarkable stupidity was $55,000 from his uncle in Mexico, $60,000 from his parents to "cover fees for transferring $12.8 million into his name", plus the money he personally lost - a total of $150,000.

So that is $35,000 from himself. Not bad, I had $3,500 in my bank account as a 22 year old. I like the part where he said he has no friends anymore and nobody calls him anymore. Poor guy.

"Not bad?" So this 22-year-old kid had $35k on hand. I don't know about most people around here, but I know of NO 22-year-old who ever had $35k on hand and willing to dish out, at least not anyone I knew when I was 22 (and that was only 3 years ago).

Selling drugs? Trust fund? eh?

If he was selling drugs, you would think he would be street smart enough to figure out this is a crock. 22 and doesnt know about these types of scams. Has this kid ever heard of the internet? Jeebus.

Not having ever withdrawn 90 grand from the bank, I don't know if this is done, but wouldn't someone at the bank raise an eyebrow? These small town farmers suddenly transferring 10s of thousands of dollars all over the world? "Hey, it's none of my business, but I'm kind of wondering why you are cleaning out the savings account you have with us"?

This is a small town. Did anyone else catch wind of this? His friends (now, unfortunately his former friends) didn't know?

The whole thing is just mind-buggering. How many adults did this have to go through? At a minimum, probably 5 - the kid, his parents and his uncle and aunt.

I wonder if there is a new word in that town.

"Man, that mechanic said he'd fix my transmission. I gave him a thousand bucks and it's still shot".

"You got Rempeled."

Total anomaly, but my little bro managed to save up $25,000 by the time he was 21 and he bought his first house... FWIW. (delivering Swiss Chalet, BTW)(workaholic, non-spend-aholic)
