Really?

You tell me an instance in Alberta where you will be subjected to second hand smoke that you don't want.

There are few to none. Restaurants - nope, hockey games - nope, bars - nope etc etc. Name me one instance when you can't just walk five feet to your left to avoid the smoke.

You know, I think smokers have been dumped on enough. Is there some kind of justification for this additional legislation? They already have to go outside, cant smoke in bars or patios, gruesome packaging and the product cant be openly displayed in stores.

Is this somehow supposed to further deter the purchase of cigarettes?

At what point do we just round up all the smokers, put them in camps and tell them that they can only smoke in the showers?

Most people smoke becuase they are addicted to it. It not only kills the smoker but others as well who want nothing to do with it.

It should be illegal.

Meh, I don't think it's that a big deal. Their are liquor stores, no one is upset about that.

Just put them all in one, hell add booze as well. Booze, cigarettes, porn. Done.

Ha. Good luck with that one.

I wonder how many of the anti-smoking posters like to drink, or would scream bloody murder if liquor was made to be illegal and shameful to enjoy.

Better yet, as Lululemon suggests, stop drinking pop and coffee now because they will be the cigarettes of the next generation.

I'd love to see pop, fast food etc being the height of shame in our society.

I've been in Calgary 5 days and the first night I was here I stepped out of the Dome and had smoke blowing in my face.

Picture this:

Family of 4. Both parents smoke. Parents both die of lung cancer and then the kids develop all kinds of illnesses from second hand smoke even though they have never smoked in their life.

Good enough?

Lots of crap shoul,d be illegal.

I used to thnk that buying things you can't afford should possibly be illegal, but then thought, it doesn't affect other people but apparently it does, it brings down the planets financial system. There are lots of things that should be ilegal, including having a lot of debt.
There is a difference between being in lots of debt and dying IMO.

That is a sad story.

That still shouldn't mean it should be illegal. It means that the parents shouldn't have been smoking around their children.

Why is this even an argument? It's becoming law in a few days, deal.

If we lived in a world without universal health care and no second hand smoke, I wouldn't care. But we don't live in that world. As a society that progresses, we are removing the things that are the most harmful to us. One day that might include chocolate bars, but until then the majority rules and the majority says they don't like smoking.

No and neither is you at the hockey game.

It should be illegal for parents to subject their underage children, unwillingly to smoke. It is dangerous for their health, until they are of age to decide if they want to legally smoke they should not be subjected to it.

Those idiot parents procreating should be illegal not the smoking.

As for you at the dome, you can't possibly say that it had any ill effects on your health, ZERO. Inconvenience maybe, but I also hate it when the guy next to me on the plane farts, but we don't make farting illegal.

It's a legitimate question, and not out of context at all. Sure, its swung to a rights issue from a health one, but that comment from you makes it to seem that you are questioning your rights as a consumer and crying foul on the restrictions the government is imposing on buying something particular at a certian store.

The government has drawn the lines in the sand with booze, even now that its privitized in Alberta, grocery stores have to have seperate, unattached outlets to be able to sell it...are you in agreement with that? Technically, porn is legal to purchase as long as you're over 18, but there's obviously a reason that its not more widely available to consumers in more outlets.

To that end, I don't see anything wrong with the restriction (exclusion is a better word, given the number of outlets that will continue to sell cigarettes) of drug stores from selling cigarettes. As I said, there's a place for everything, and pharmacies amongst all other locations, aren't that proper place to be selling cigarettes.

I'm all for it. I'm somewhat interested in knowing who the Ninjas on CP are though.

If it was illegal it would cut down on the amount of people who actually smoked. Of course it wouldn't stop everyone.

Do I care about people who smoke weed? NO. Most do it in their homes and are actually aware of who is around them.

If my second hand smoke argument was enough, is my 'discretion' argument better? Unfortunately, many smokers don't give a fawk where they are. That includes lightning up as soon as they exit the saddledome.
