Speaking of young and foolish........
A co worker in the mid 90's used a hibatchi to heat up the oil pan. Suprisingly it worked

I have used a cookie sheet covered with BBQ brickets to start a rental car I had frozen in the middle of nowhere. In retrospect, I probably should have covered the flame with some foil or something, but I wanted to see if it would catch on fire or not.

I had always wondered why there always seemed to be a rash of car fires during extreme cold weather. No more.

That's awesome! Total win win, either the car starts, or catches on fire.

I have an 04 GM vehicle these days, but nothing could stop my old red van from starting.
I started it once at -40ish without being plugged in, and it went on first crank. No whine or anything. 'Twas a beauty of a vehicle.
As for T_U... not sure what to do buddy, if you can't try anything suggested already here, then the only thing I can say is wait?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Fortunately I didn't need to use any of them.
I had my car fully loaded ready for my trip before I realized my car won't start. Went out to grab some stuff to bring back in to make my car less prone to a break-in; thought about giving it a try and it for some reason worked this time.
It was already dark, so my mom suggested waiting until daylight to come, but I was worried it might not start again then, so I made it to Calgary!
So my suggestion for everyone reading this thread, is keep trying every hour or so until it goes. That's what I did.

Can you do that with a fuel-injected vehicle?

You can, but it dries out the rubber rings in the injectors so if you do it too often they'll crack and break and need to be replaced.

I had this problem a few days ago. I opened the hood, took some garbage bags, and wrapped them around the whole opening and taped all the garbage bags together til it sealed off the interior and made a tent. Then I took a blow dryer, and held it in the tent. Eventually, it got pretty warm in the tent.
It took nearly 45 minutes, but eventually the engine turned over. Seems more trouble than just waiting til it thaws out on it's own, but if ya really need the car to start, and can spare an hour in blistering cold, then go for it.

Where do you find tape that sticks in minus 45 weather?

Where are you living that sees -45 weather?
Keep in mind most of us on this board live in Calgary, and we rarely see temperatures below -30; and nothing below -35.

I was so pissed at the rental company. I was stuck in high river and even though I had roadside coverage so they should have had a tow truck come out and get me they decided to wait till th next day ( it was 2am ), so my buddy pulled his 'emergency kit' from his truck and we got lighting
