I have one of the original 60GB PS3's and the fan on it is always going, and is quite loud.
I also have a 40GB version, bought about a year ago. The fan on that never comes on during BR/DVD playback, so it is really quiet. I havent done any gaming on it, so I cant comment on how loud it is with games.

I got a free LG Blu-ray player with my TV, and it has probably put off me buying a PS3 for a while. I am pretty impressed so far, and the BD-Live thing allows the player to update its firmware if you connect it to the internet as well.

So the PS3 has all the features of a good standalone player? Does it have BD live and the 2.0 ready thing? Does it play all media as well? I assume they upconvert regular dvds.

I dont know what upconvert means, but they play regular DVDs and CDs. I saw a Blu-Ray disc player in Best buy for $400. I dont understand why someone would by that when they can get a PS# for the same price

Yeah the PS3 up converts, and apparently does a decent job as well. Not as good as the really expensive players, but better than the really cheap ones.

The PS3 is probably the best Blu Ray player on the market right now. The super fast load times and it was 2.0 complient way before any of the curent 2.0 player were on the market. If you want a stand alone BD player look at the Panasonic BD-35 it's been doing really well in the reviews I have read. Faster load times than the Sony 350 and aparently better picture as well.
Here is the artle that really helped me when I bought mine.

Sorry, link should work now.

The big downside to the PS3 as a player is you can't use your Harmony remote on it; the remotes are bluetooth not IR.
You'd have to get an IR module to do that.

I have a 40 GB PS3 and the fan on is very quiet. I don't think the speed of it changes whether I'm gaming, watching videos or navigating the front end.

Yeah, that added to my decision. I would cry if I lost my Harmony 670.

I was thinking of getting one of these remotes on boxing day. It's totally worth it eh?
I am looking for a BR player this year as well. I was a victim of format wars and I lost I can't decide if I want a stand alone or a PS3. It sounds like PS3 is the way to go.

Well if you lost it or broke it, you would certainly notice. It's worth it if you have multiple components (ie tv, receiver, dvd/blu-ray player, xbox/ps3, etc) Nothing like pressing one button on your only remote switch between TV and Xbox

I would go with the PS3. I have one, I use it as a media hub; Blu Ray, DVD, and streaming video and audio from every computer in the house.
Blu Ray live is kinda interesting, you can download additional special features and discs. And they recently unveiled new 400 GB Blu Ray discs, which will be compatible with the PS3 ( http://www.pcworld.com/article/15509...evelopers.html), and new 1 TB discs for 2013. I'm not sure if some of the cheaper models would be compatible; I don't see why not, but why risk it when you can just get the PS3?
The noise is not an issue....incredibly quiet machine. I have the 40 GB model and don't hear any noise whatsoever. You can use the Sony Blu Ray Remote for the PS3, as a IR Remote won't work right out of the box. You can however, buy an IR adaptor and recieve full functionality of a Harmony Remote; some IR adaptors may not be able to handle on and off, but I just googled one and this site here ( http://www.ps3toothfairy.com/faq.php) appears to be able to handle the function.

I am hoping beyond hope that there will be a clearance on Boxing Day.

TBQH, I wouldn't even wait for boxing day. If you really want a BluRay, just go a negotiate with Futureshop or something now. On BD you may just get the equivalent of saving the tax while maybe 20 players will be available for first come first serve, to which 100 people will be lining up at 2am.

That's the way it is with any new technology. Early adopters know this already. That's life.
I had a 286 as well as a 386. Now, my latest computer makes those look pretty silly. Not to mention the Vic 20 and TRS-80's I had as well.

bump
whats a good blu-ray player that is reasonably up to date in terms of the latest advances? What are the more important "latest advances", and what do they mean for my viewing or listening pleasure?

like others have said here. the PS3 is a good choice. sony (the blu-ray guys) is pretty good with updating the system so it is always up to date.
also, the guys at criterion us the PS3 to test their disc. that is a pretty good endorsement.
oh and it plays games!!!!
