For cases of stuff where people felt something, didn't get on a plane, etc, it's just examples of post hoc reasoning.
If you feel a chill and nothing happens, then you don't remember the chill, but if something does happen then you remember the chill.

Every plane crash somebody comes out and says their loved one had an un-easy feeling before getting on the doomed plane. Drives me nuts because I'd be shocked if a plane has ever taken off without several people having bad feelings about it.
On a side note, I'd like to thank flameswin for freaking me out before bed. I don't believe anything paranormal occurred, but for whatever reason I was thinking about the story, walked into my pitch black laundry room at about midnight, turned on a light, saw an awkwardly hung shirt out of the corner of my eye and nearly had to start a thread entitled "so i crapped my pants".
