My company posted a message to people to leave early, so when I looked out side I decided it was time to go.
Going west up the hill out of the core was a little slow. Once I got home is when the fun started. I was watching folks going up the hill in front of our house and not having much luck - and making terrible choices.
Don't try to drive your rear wheel drive car with summer tires... just park and get a ride home. Don't be putting your self and others in peril trying to push your car up a hill...

It took me an hour to get from the Art Parkade to Crowchild Southbound. An hour to get from there to Glenmore, and an hour to get from Glenmore to Mackenzie Towne.
I have shoveled the walk twice I got home and I might have to do it again before I go to bed!

I did not see any city plowers or sanders on the way home, roads seem to show that too.

Which way did you take home? They usually devote all plows to keeping the most major routes open until the storm is over.

I had to do Pizza Deliveries in this weather. You would think people would tip me a bit more due to the HORRID conditions, yet I get even less than usual. Not to mention both my wipers were frozen so I had like 2 inches of space to see where I was going, and now they are both broken.
Oh yeah, and some lady insisted on doing 30kph, in an 80kph zone. That was fun when I blazed passed her going sideways. Not to mention I ran a red light while braking trying to stop for it, but someone else came with me so I had a good laugh.

We had a company function this afternoon, called a cab at 4. They said two hours. I caught the bus at 7, got home less than an hour later thanks to the bus lane on Crowchild.

People just need to put winter tires on. Going on the hills on Bow Trail sucked today. I drive a mid engine car with winter tires and although I was slipping and sliding a little, it sucked more because people couldn't get up the hill. I got home safely although my nerves were a little bit fried.

Do you have an 8 am exam tomorrow?
The roads are supposed to be terrible?
It took me almost 3 hours today, granted, that was during rush hour, but its supposed to snow all night. I'd leave now if I were you.
BTW, I've never seen so many dead cars on the side of the road. There is a brand new beemer just cooked halfway up the hill at Crowchild and University Dr.

You people are all sheep. Today was an embarassment to the City of Calgary. Everyone DOESN'T need to buy winter tires. For starters, that's not even possible. And it's never going to happen. What needs to happen is that the City of Calgary needs to get it's F.N. emergency response act together. I spent 3.5 hours on the roads today. The radio said there were 83 sanders out. I don't buy it. I saw exactly one sander on the opposing direction Deerfoot trail. There was no evidence of sanding or any road treatment on my side of Deerfoot. Nor was there on Country Hills Blvd, Stoney Trail, Sarcee, Highway One, etc.. And the Bow Trail hill, OMG, you should have seen that... hundreds of cars going nowhere. How many major roadways do we have in the city on steep hills? And yet the City never manages to do anything to prevent the chaos on Bow Trail that happens EVERY snowfall.
Sorry, I have to go find someone to punch now.

There is no way you can instantly sand/plow every major road in Calgary during rush hour. How do you expect them to plow Crowchild when it is a parking lot? I know Glenmore was plowed by the time I got to it.
Perfection costs a lot of money. Gotta pick your battles and I for one am glad that we don't plow every street 2-3 times on a day like today, need something to stem the tide of rising taxes.

This storm was predicted for at least 24 hours before it arrived. In fact, it arrived almost exactly on schedule at 12:00 noon, and I watched it roll in on the weather radar. We get these storms maybe twice a year. So yes, you can have plows/sanders out on at least Deerfoot running from the start of the storm, and you can do some pre sanding of on ramps and steep sections. (And not this powder they are using, which is a joke.)
Having lived through identical situations in Vancouver, I'd say Vancouver does a much better job.

Exactly my point. It is not economically feasible to have enough sanders, plows and personnel to clear something that happens twice a year in the speed you are saying is acceptable.
I am sure Vancouver does a much better job. How many similar storms do they have a year? Would that number make it more viable to have a larger fleet of sanders and personnel?

umm...how often does Vancouver ever actually deal with this and when they do are you really trying to tell me that their city does not get even more backed up? I have never lived there but whenever I watch the news and Vancouver actually gets a snow storm the entire city gets shut down.

Wow, what an adventure tonight. I had a company christmas party to attend, but I seriously thought my date was the only person I was suppose to pick up. Wrong. My buddies call me up last minute and said their cab went AWOL. So I had to drive the length of country hills to pick up 3 guys and my date, drive all the way down to 32nd ave for the party, then drive the same route back dropping all the drunks off. Not before my friends deciding to have "adventures." Throwing up...sleeping on the snow...
Yeah, that was sure fun. I just got home about 20 minutes ago. What a crazy night.
