I find it hit or miss to be honest. There is one guy at the Westbrook location who dulls them more then sharpens them, I just avoid him at all costs.

Same here.

Mind you technically I don't know how to skate, so perhaps a hack skater like me might not recognize a hack sharpening job.

you know what I found works great. that tool that has a Y on the end of it. My skates were brutally dull and I ran that thing over them a couple times and they were way to sharp.

Similar to this thing here

I wonder how well something like this would work. http://www.skatemate.com/live/

I own one of those but you have to be careful as they will cut down your blades really quick

Yeah those Magic Sticks can eff your skates up pretty bad pretty quick. Couple trainers I know who work in the AJ won't touch them with a ten foot pole. They give you an edge to skate on no doubt, but it lasts a very short time I find, and if you don't have that thing lined up just right you'll completely wreck your blades.

FKA... that think looks like it would do a "<" edge to your skate, rather than a ")". Most, if not all legit skate sharpeners should actually have two edges, concave. Not one sharp point down the middle.

Am I looking at that thing wrong?

I dont know what it does. but it made the proper edge when I tried a teammates. Good for a quick fix if you forgot to get skates sharpened I guess.

I don't think it messes up the hollow of the skates. It only fixes up the outer edge of the blade like a honing stone.
