I don't want to derail the thread, but any art is never "totally subjective."

That being said, it's difficult to define characteristics that good art must have. Clearly, music such as the stuff recorded by band like nickleback doesn't have those good characteristics.

This could apply to EVERY genre of games!

Quote:
Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger took a quick break from being preternaturally untalented to express his displeasure with zombie games, saying "So kids: Kill zombies. Set down the Left 4 Dead, learn how to kill an actual zombie head to the mall and kill zombies, because it's hard to find more people who are ready for the coming apocalypse, ready to get out there. It's getting harder and harder, but I think we've done it."

Set down the Warcraft 3, learn how to chop down an actual tree and head to the forest and gather wood, because it's hard to find more people who are ready for the coming Berserker rush, ready to get out there. It's getting harder and harder, but I think we've done it."

Oh for crying out loud.. he's basically playing guitar hero without the TV.. except it's easier in real life because no one notices when you screw up.

Gotta go ahead and respectfully disagree with you on this one. I would say over the past year I've played rock band maybe 35 - 50 hours and spent about $300 on it in total. You tell me how many people with zero musical ability going in can spend $300 bucks and the equivalent of one work week and actually develop a band.

The fact of the matter is attaining musical instruments, learning those instruments and writing songs is an arduous task. I love music as much as the next guy, but the process of actually being in a band requires far more dedication than I'm willing to spend.

Pretty hard to eff-up 1/4 and 1/8th notes with the odd triplet.

Chad has a teleprompter displaying the lyrics for the songs at Nickleback concerts.

Yeah, they are playing Rock Band on stage.

Doesn't mean I can't like them though. If I'm seeking musical inspiration, I'm not gonna put on a Nickleback album. But if all I want is simple, repetitive drivel that I can stand, Kroeger to the rescue!

I'm sure some of you have seen this, but if not, this seems appropriate...

Link doesn't work, but I'm guessing it's the clip in Europe where people were throwing rocks at him?

I know a bloke who is 5 years old and he's pretty good at Guitar Hero (better than me).

After playing that for a while, he pestered his parents to buy him a real guitar, which they did. Now he "plays" that a lot more than Guitar Hero, and he wants lessons.

I don't think this would have happened without the video game.

Chad Kroeger is an idiot.

Those songs go well together, but they aren't the same song. The bridge up to the first chorus is very similar, and they clearly follow the same timing and format, but they aren't the same.

That said, I do think most of their songs sound very similar, and I am not a big fan of theirs.

Actually, I quite enjoyed those songs put together. Maybe they should do them that way.

I dunno I think they could suck it up for the chance to play in front of 10,000+ people every night. I know I would.

IMO he does have a point. I enjoy Rockband/guitar hero as much as the next guy, but if some of these people who are ######edly good at them spent as much time learning how to play real guitar, they might find that there is a little more entertainment in learning any song you want vs playing the same 50 songs over and over.

That sort of advances the point. There must be thousands of bands out there that would want to open for a band as big as Nickelback, yet they are having a hard time filling out the lineup? Something doesn't quite mesh.

I doubt the Foo Fighters, Chili Peppers and Coldplay have any trouble finding bands to tour with.*

And how long has Guitar Hero actually been out? To suggest that the little fad is turning people away from music and having an impact on the number of bands available to tour is just simply idiotic.

*I'm not comparing any of these bands to Nickelback, but I'd guess their record sales and the venues they play are fairly similar.

here's some thoughts. first nickelback does blow. just because they sell records doesn't mean anything. britney spears sold 31 mil in the u.s. and 83 mil worldwide... does that make her a super talented musician?????

secondly, as a real musician, i love playing rock band... sure i could go to my basement and play my drums:

but i enjoy being a rocker on the ps3 sometimes too... so they are not mutually exclusive activities... as mentioned above, these games can actually spawn people to get into the real instruments. maybe if we had better bands to inspire us (as opposed to garbage like nickelback) more people might be playing already. instead it takes a game with mostly older music to get people excited about playing.

thirdly, it is a totally lame analogy. just because i play nhl09 online with the cp fatas doesn't mean i should try to go pro. photon provides other excellent, yet less realistic, comparisons of the awful logic used.

bottom line: kroeger is an idiot who puts out crappy music. i trust his opinion about as much as russic's...

I liked Nickelback until their latest CD. This time I finally think they put out some trash. Mind you, I think their best CD was "the State" which is long before they actually became popular, and before a lot of people started hating them. Oh how I wish for 1998 Nickelback again.

Otherwise, I have played all the video games and I don't have a musical bone in my body. But because of them I have considered trying to learn real guitar.
