I feel your pain. It's kinda infuriating, eh? and I love how it always ends up as a military style haircut. They just keep f'ing up and it gets shorter and shorter and shorter in attempts to salvage it.
As for the bolded part, I'm just as spineless. I cannot look someone in the eye and tell them that they've failed as a barber. Though I have walked out of a barber shop wondering why I even paid, let alone tipped.

I go to ROXX Hair near Chinook (in that ugly purple building beside the Le Chateau outlet). I've seen two of their stylists several times and I'm always happy. It's a steal at $25 for a cut too, I used to pay almost $40 and I get a better job done here.

The Barber Shop (yes, that is the business' name) in McKenzie Towne has always done good work for me. It's a place just for men's hair.
I think they charge about $25 per cut.

You have to be kidding me. I just looked at my hair again, and noticed the lady cut my sideburns completely asymmetrical. My left sideburn is like an inch shorter than my right one.
The stylist must have been playing a really cruel joke on me. That's the only logical explanation. I didn't even think it was possible to screw up a haircut this bad.

Haha, it sounds like we both went to the same place.
Yeah, it's definitely infuriating. She had already cut off way too much hair after only a minute in the chair, so I was screwed either way, but she just kept cutting it shorter and shorter and shorter. I have no idea what the hell she was doing. I doubt she did either.
Helen Keller would have done a better job cutting my hair than this lady did. Seriously.
I have no idea why I even paid for it either. I guess I just didn't want her to feel bad about it, even though the haircut was/is horrible beyond words.

It's fricken amazing how incompetent some people are. This is why I shave my head most of the year. I can trim the outline on the back of my head with a hand mirror and the mirror in the bathroom better than some "barbers" that get to stand there and do it to someone else.

Maybe her husband is bald and she's bitter toward men that have hair.

When I was growing my hair out, people told me and it's somewhat true: hair grows at about 1/2" a month.
I went to a new barber over the week, and I thought I got a bad one. She didn't mess my hair up or anything, she listened to what I wanted. I won't go back to her again though for fear that she will mess it up.
When she began to tidy up my back neckline and area, she actually asked me if I like it square or rounded. My natural hairline is square, so it has to be squared. If she actually rounded my back, in a few days some stubble would begin to grow out and i would look like a total tool from the back.

It's like a 3/4 of an inch long on the sides and only 1.5" long on top. It looks like a chimp took a dump on the top of my head. Seriously.
So now I have to wait about 6 months for it to grow out before I can have it fixed, but for next time, does anyone have any recommendations on good barbers/hair stylists in the city? If you do, PLEASE let me know. Preferably someone who specializes in men's hair. I'm tired of paying $30-$50 to look like crap.
Thanks!

...if you told her a #4 on top, and 2-3 on the sides, that would be...way shorter than what you're saying it is.
#2= 1/4"
#3= 3/8"
#4= 1/2"
So if you're 3/4" on the sides, and 1.5" on the top, then yes, she screwed it up--but you should be able to go and get it cut NOW to fix it, if you really wanted a 2/3 fade up into a 4.
Not saying she didn't butcher it, I'm sure she did, but it sounds like you wanted it way longer than a 2/3 and 4.
Editing to add:

Honestly. I don't even understand how someone can screw up a haircut that bad. It's not even CLOSE to what I asked for. There's absolutely NOTHING similar between those cuts. NOTHING. The sides are too long and rounded, so it makes my head look like an egg, and the top is too short to slick back (so it just sits straight up) and makes my forehead look huge. It's easily the worst haircut I've ever had. And the worst part is that it's so short that I have to walk around with it for like half a year before it grows out enough to be fixed.
And to top it all off, being the nice guy that I am, I actually tipped her.

Yeaaaah, that was a problem on both sides of the equation. If you told her you wanted a number four on top--that's how short it'll be. I always confirm with someone before I actualy DO the cut, if it's going that short, which she probably should have done. Apparently she still screwed it up, especially if you gave her a PICTURE, but if you said 2/3 into a 4, that's actually pretty much what she gave you. (But I'm a little late to the party here, and wow, if there was a picture, she should've known you didn't actually MEAN a 4 on top. Ugh, bad stylists making the rest of us look bad. Idiot.)
Also, you don't necessarily need to spend >$50 on a cut to get a good haircut--we charge $15 for a mens' cut at my salon, and we never have any complaints. You can have a crappy stylist at an expensive salon, or a great stylist at an inexpensive salon--it's all about trial and error, unfortunately.

Yes, I definitely told the lady to leave the top 4 inches long, not a #4.

Reviving this thread a bit...
Anybody know of a place (decent price of course) where they cut or thin out hair with an actual razor?
I have grown out my hair (quite thick) and am going for a new look and according to my research (nate archibald look...call me gay) it works best when the stylist/barber uses a razor for additional texture or whatnot
any places that the CP brain trust are aware of that have good reputations
and are able to do this?
