I donate every year and wear it proudly (and properly, for what it's worth).

I am also one of the only people who wear one at my work (for some reason).

A tip for wearing one: the best way to attach it is to put the pin through the poppy itself after putting it through your shirt the second time. It is hard to explain, but doing this makes it pretty much impossible to fall off.

People think I'm anti-war and anti-military. I'm really just anti-stupid war and anti-frivolous military. I'm intensely proud and am extremely thankful of those who sacrificed their lives for us (not counting those who died in Afghanistan, but I don't want to get into that in a thread like this).

For a long time there were fewer and fewer vets from WWI around to thank, and now there are nearly none. And the vets from WWII decline in numbers every year too.

And we have some of the newer veterans to thank, but they aren't prominent in numbers either. The newer conflicts are not as all encompassing that past conflicts have been.

Which shows, those veterans have done their job, and their declining numbers are all the more reason to celebrate their sacrifice.

They are veterans, so we don't have to be.

I always either lost my poppy or stuck myself with that stupid pin so i just went to the dollar store and bought one of those mini canadian flag pins and used that. Ive seen more and more people doing it lately and haven't lost one yet.

yeah that's a good idea.

i picked my poppy up yesterday at safeway. i've worn one every year for as long as i can remember. Walking around safeway yesterday though there were a lot of people without them. And a lot of them were older people as well.

There was this Veteran at the safeway who was putting the poppy on my wife. She was wearing a zip-up hoody and he pretty much just unzipped half her shirt to show her how to put it on. He put it through the shirt but didn't push the pin all the way through, rather sliding the poppy down the pin and putting the end of the pin through the poppy in the same way evman150 explained.

He pretty much molested my wife in public, but he was a vetran and his poppy application is nearly flawless, so he's cool.

I believe there's also the rule that the poppy is to come off after 11:00 am on the 11th. I've heard breaking the rule is similar to the poppy on the right rule ... it can be considered disrespectful, but in the end it's far more important to be wearing one in the first place.

edit: Poor example ... according to the Veteran's Affairs website the poppy can be worn year round.

I always swap my poppy pin for a safety pin.. I always feel bad when I lose them, especially outside..

I always wear my poppy. Well before the time they are available and well after remembrance day. Even when i lived in the states and when i'll live there again. The veterans (past, present and future) of our armed forces deserve more than this show of appreciation but it is at least some form of appreciation that everyone can and SHOULD show.

My daughter is 2. She doesn't understand the reason why the poppy is important but she understands that it is important to mom and dad that we all wear one. She was so proud when she handed the $20 bill to the veteran the other day to get her Poppy Dog. I was so proud that she asked for money to give to the veteran so she could get the dog. (NOTE: she has never asked for money to buy something. Nor has she asked in stores since we got the dog. Before this I didn't realize she knew we gave money at stores to get things).

I always buy one. My grandfather was shot in the back in WW1. He survived. The funny thing is we called him Poppy. I've always loved poppies. I don't always wear my poppy which I buy every year, because sometimes I don't want a pin through nice fabric. I think that goes for alot of people. buzzards wife

I allowed them to put a poppy box on my counter at my store. I try to wear them, but they keep falling out. I was thinking about getting one of those little canadian flag pins and put it through the middle, but I heard someone getting at someone for "defacing" the poppy?
I do have 2 poppies tattooed on my left ankle, does that count?

I'd rather see a poppy on your coat with a flag in it than one floating in a puddle in some parking lot. Much like the other poppy etiquette items, I'd say it shouldn't matter as long as you're wearing one.
