The threat is real and it has already been shown that home grown terrorist can inflict extreme violence to achieve their ends (ie Bombing of the Federal Building in
Oklahoma).
However, with these guys, I really wonder how far advance this plot is and whether the media has blown it out of proportion. The plan really is quite disorganized and overly complex and I wouldn't be surprised that they have guns based on their organizational affliations. If this was an non election year, the headlines would have focus that the target was a school.
Glad the FBI is vigilant though

Four people were arrested in Denver in August in a plot against Obama:

Well it couldn't have been too far advanced. They were planning on driving a car at Obama while firing out the window, and be wearing white tuxes and top hats.

I mean c'mon, wearing a top hat in a car? There was obviously still some tweaking to be done.

Seriously though, nowadays it is pretty hard to get anywhere near the President. They go pretty far to disrupt daily life to ensure the President is safe wherever he goes.

Although...

If you were smart enough, you could hatch a brilliant plan but I am pretty confident there aren't any skinheads smart enough.

I think a lot of these assasination thoery crap is just anti-Americanism. People have spent so long trying to propagete this idea of Americans as ignorant redknecks that they cannot accept America is about to do something extremely liberal and progressive. Meanwhile right wing nationalist parties are making strong headway all across Europe.

When a geniuine plot arises call me. This was just a couple of redknecks fantasizing in their basements. In a country of 300 million people that has freedom of speech, this is bound to happen.

The Denver plot seemed more than just "rednecks fantasizing":

Sources told CBS4 police found two high-powered, scoped rifles in the car along with camouflage clothing, walkie-talkies, wigs, a bulletproof vest, a spotting scope, licenses in the names of other people and 44 grams of methamphetamine. One of the rifles is listed as stolen from Kansas.

You have been called.

In the present case:

Agents seized a rifle, a sawed-off shotgun and three pistols from the men when they were arrested. Authorities alleged the two men were preparing to break into a gun shop to steal more.

The court records say Mr. Cowart and Mr. Schlesselman also bought nylon rope and ski masks to use in a robbery or home invasion to fund their spree, during which they allegedly planned to go from state to state and kill people.

For the Obama plot, the legal documents show, Mr. Cowart and Mr. Schlesselman “planned to drive their vehicle as fast as they could toward Obama shooting at him from the windows.”

Any of the more-organized plots, I wouldn't be too worried about, as the FBI probobly knows about all of them. I'd be more worried about some lunatic working by himself who's got a sniper rifle - perhaps a guy who's not known to the authorities, or known by the authorities, but not considered a threat. It's those guys that are just about impossible to stop.

These items although scary for Canadians, are exactly what I would expect to find in the home of any neo-nazi redkneck type in the States. I seriously doubt they were actually going to go through with their "plan" or that it was in any way plausible.

You seem to be kind of defensive at the idea of Americans possibly trying to kill a black president. You just don't think it could happen?, or that canadians who think it could, are being anti-american? Or am I reading too much into your posts?

I'm not saying it couldn't happen. I just think people treating it as a certainty is pretty anti-american.

I also don't think people should be drawing any generalizations about Americans based on the actiosn of a few (and in this case 2) hillbillies.

Well that was quick. I'd have thought they'd at least wait to see if he actually does get elected. Not a lot of faith in McCain it seems....

I don't think anyone was generalizing Americans. If anything, I think people were speaking to the point you made: IN a country of 300million, of course there's going to be some wackos, and imo, the chances of one or more of these wackos killing a president isn't that far-fetched, and it sin't anti-american to think that.

I guess my reaction was a bit overreactionary. I've just had to sit the last 8 years through the University system and everyone trying to blame every single problem in the world on Americans.

Not accusing anyone on this board of it, but there now seems to be a foregone conclusion in some circles that Americans could never do anything liberal, so if Obama gets elected he will be taken out instantly.

I don't think we've seen the last of these types of headlines.

I honestly believe racial tension will be very high in the USA if Obama becomes president. You've gotta think there are still a significant amount of people who would not want a black man being their leader. You would also have to think some of these people would absolutely hate Obama being elected enough to try to do something about it.

It would be JFK/MLK all over again.

You've got to be kidding me. You honestly believe there are 3 Million Americans who want to kill Obama?

Unbelievable. What world do you live in?

I can't believe that season one of 24 is actually happening right before our eyes.
It's surreal.
