Wow, that is some pretty serious stuff. How anyone could think the officer overreacted is beyond me.

In the article it is asked "what more could be done." They are saying that they think there are already enough police officers.
What I think should be done is get tougher with people who break the law. I recall at the 2000 Grey Cup seeing fans running onto the field. One even got so far as to shake Damon Allen's hand. But then I noticed what happened with the fans who were caught; the police were escorting them out of the stadium and letting them go.
I'm not sure if "catch and release" is the standard practice, but I could see McMahon Stadium not wanting to piss off customers. Maybe its time for them to see that zero tolerance may be a better option.
I will be going to tomorrow's game, dressed in blue, and my buddy is driving so I will have a couple of beers. But I can also say that I won't be having any conversations with police, because I like most people know how to act.
And it was mentioned earlier that it seems to only be Riders fans. Well I've also seen it with Eskimo fans, but it seems the Rider fans are worse. I'm not a "Stamps fan" per se, but I usually cheer for them a bit 15-16 games per year. And when the Riders are in town I usually make a point of wearing red to contrast all the green in the stands. And once I had some Riders fans get all upity and in my face because I was wearing a Flames jersey.

Riders games are the most bizzare games, cause the fans in the stadium are 50% green, 50% red.

I don't fault the cop, but maybe the crowd control element of the CPS shouldn't have guns in situations like that. I can't imagine opening fire at a crowd is ever going to be the best option.

I'm actually part of the security team for the football games. My Father runs the security there so my brothers and I help him out there from time to time.
Anyway, the point I wanted to make is that -without question- Saskatchewan crowds are the worst in the league. Edmonton games are huge, and we beef up a little bit for them... but Saskatchewan games are treated like potential riots. We have a whole other rule book for Rider games.
I don't know what the deal is with Rider fans, but I can guarantee with absolute certainty that they are the worst fans in the league when it comes to doing stupid, dangerous, ignorant things in visiting stadiums. Even with just general rudeness and arrogance (drunk or not!).
The above statement is backed with almost 20 years of personal, first-hand experience dealing with visiting fans of every single team in the league. It is absolutely indisputable.
Edit: btw I don't talk like this in person. I dunno wtf happens to me when I get in front of a keyboard...

A cop without a gun is a security guard. Security guards get cops when the patron in question is not responding to their requests.
Understandably so, it'd be rare that a gun would be fired at a Stamps game, but if they aren't going to take the cop seriously with a gun, there's no way the cop would have any authority in their eyes without the gun.
(green or orange) And I've seen enough movies to know that there's a chance a homicidal maniac can take over a statium, rig it with explosives, and threaten death unless a ransom is met. All it takes is one cop with a gun to foil the plan.(/green or orange)

Oops looks like someone beat me to it.
As a Rider fan I expect the CPS to be biased towards their own fans. Even if I get a beer dumped on me, which thankfully has never happened yet (although I've had numerous verbal insults hurled at me, not a big deal), and I took a swing at the guy I would fully expect to get thrown out while the other guy gets off.
As for the comment about stay classy Rider fans, I doubt they were fighting with themselves.

I think what's happened the last few years is 2 factions of Roughrider fans...there are your typical, fun loving, passionate fans (Roughrider fans), then you have Rider Nation, the guys that get falling down drunk, and treat games as a way to act like a tough guy, knowing they have another couple of thousand fans in their corner of the stadium to back them up. Rider Nation is what causes the problems, not Rider Fans.
One thing that should be looked at is the big piss-up that occurs at Foothills Stadium before Rider games...you have this big kegger, all these guys getting hammered before the game, and then coming into McMahon with this mob mentality, which causes friction and other incidents like we've seen...and it's been getting worse, especially the last few years. Maybe this event shouldn't occur?

The Province of Sask was running ads inviting Sask ex-pats to return home. Good advice.

Not always... just stealth henchmen that are undetected, and quick to set up explosives, and are able to stick around during the game to hold semi-automatic weaponry, on the off chance they run into said cop with one gun.

Either that or let them have their piss-up, but not allow people into the stands who are obviously already drunk. I.e. if you are drunk in a public place, that place being the parking lot outside the stadium, send them on their way right there. That also handles the tailgating in my opinion. Have a drink or two if you want before the game, but if you get so hammered you can't make it into the stadium without staggering around, you can't come in and are subject to ticketing by CPS for 'drunk in a public place'.

I know this is a Calgary board but not a single person so far in this thread has said "maybe the Stamps fans hate having their home building invaded to a far greater extent than with any other team so they start s*** just as often as Rider fans"
I know you're all going to just keep piling on the Rider fans but like I said they aren't fighting themselves. I'd be willing to bet fault is at least 50/50.
In fact all the blind faith in the awesomeness of your own fans just makes me hate the Stamps fans even more. Typical self righteous bull crap. Like you're all innocent.

Without question. How that even gets a liquor license is beyond me.
Complete mob mentality...even 5 years ago, all it was was the good natured ribbing between fans that cheered for the Riders.
Half of these dolts don't cheer for the Riders, they're too busy going to and from the beer line and cakling how coool whatever fruit they've stuck on their head looks. The remainder of the time is left to cut down each and evertything to do with the Stamps/Calgary, and hurl insults and vulgarities...again at the Stamps, the city and anyone who tells them to pipe down. Lacking complete class, decencey, and respect.
I'd be hard pressed to find any of these people over 25 years old, either. Anyone younger then that remebers when the Riders were garbage, and only had black and white memories to get them through the seasons, and isn't so quick to spout off.

No, they weren't, but as has been mentioned above, not even Edmonton games come remotely close to what we see when the Riders are in town. Saskatchewan fans come in and create an atmosphere that causes this level of disturbance.
God, Oiler and Canuck fans are tame compared to Rider fans at McMahon.

I think one of the issues is that there are 10,000 rider fans and stupid drunks going to the game and that gives the idiots some back up. Normally if you go into a visiting stadium you are a ######bag you are not going to act like one because you are heavily out numbered but as soon as the numbers approach even all of a sudden people think they have back up. Combine that with the fact that the stupid drunks wearing red usually don't get called out on what they are doing and you get a volatile situation. If you put 10,000 oilers fans into the saddledome it would end in a riot.
2 things that could be done to diffuse it would be as mentioned earlier to shutdown foothills. The other would be to have an 11:00 start to the Rider games. It is a lot tougher to get up at 9:00 to start drinking then it is at noon.
