8 years ago you could argue that but the niche you speak of no longer is the only user of Apple products. They have a vertical product integration that is unparalleled. HP, Dell and Microsoft all have great individual products but the average home is better looked after by Apple's complete UX.
The recent success of Apple is because they recognize the failings of their competition. Microsoft is unfocused and allowed a very focused Steve Jobs to dominate the consumer space. An $800 dollar laptop will continue to increase market share and yes people complain about how Apple does certain things. Apple at least have a clear vision and direction and if you don't like it, here is the PC section.
Microsoft can no longer bully their way to success and force adoption. They have not yet learned that they need to innovate and concentrate their efforts on Microsoft as a whole and avoid chasing every shinny thing out there.
And for god's sake, stand up for yourself, Apple makes fun of you for two years and all you can come back with is that Deepak Chopra is a PeeCee?
It used to be fun being a Mac user 10 years ago but now it's just to damn easy.

Oh please say you forgot your green text... :P
I'm not sure that dropping the price point of a Macbook constitutes "dumbing it down". If anything, this is Apple's move to capitalize on the recent upsurge in their market share by removing yet another barrier to entry. It's also to get more people on the OSX platform before Microsoft get's it's act together with Windows 7.
Apple NEEDS to make using a Mac even easier then it is now if it's to survive what is coming. Microsoft didn't get to be where it is in the market by releasing crap repeatedly.
As an owner of the current generation of Macbooks, I'm looking forward to what they will do with this aluminum casing. If they can fix the nagging issues (heat is a big problem), I might consider upgrading to the new model. I just can't bring myself to buying a Powerbook due to their wildly overpriced nature.

That said, a unified aluminum shell would do wonders for heat distribution. My Macbook could cook a turkey in 2 hours if I'm really taxing it.

Mine makes delectable eggs benedict in the mornings.
The thing generates a ton of heat at times, so yeah, heat distribution would be a good idea.

New MBP: (not officially)
Also, the $899 price that was at first believed to be a MB is more likely a new LED display, meaning the new Macbooks will start at $1299 ($200 HIGHER than right now). Apparently Apple doesn't think economic conditions will affect their price points.
Event tomorrow at 1 pm ET.

I am in the "maybe I want a laptop" crowd, since I am in my last year of university, I can't really afford to go get a macbook and I don't want a PC because, to be honest, I want to try a mac. I have had great times with my numerous iPods and iPhone... so the laptop should be good too.
800 might be low enough for me to just get it, whereas over 1000 I have to think twice!
I am excited for this announcement!

Like was earlier mentioned, it looks like the $800 pricepoint is not for a MacBook, but rather for an LED display.
Also... a cool thing about the new trackpads, is that they are apparently made out of glass and no longer have a button below them... in fact the whole trackpad is now a button instead.
Also... the current rumour is that the MacBook will get an Nvdia 9400 chip, while the MacBook Pro will get an Nvida 9600 chip.
Other than that, it seems like it will just be some minor performance bumps.
1hr, 10min to go!

The one rumor that I hope isn't true is that even Macbook Pro's will now only have a glossy screen, and no matte option. As someone who uses these things for a living, I think that's quite a travesty.

Yeah I'm a bit peeved about that too. It just doesn't make sense that they'd do that, though. Also of note, is that they are (rumoured) not even be updating the 17" models...
Some weird decisions, if true. We'll see though.

I guess I could understand that 17" not being updated (always thought it was too big to really be portable myself), but the matte/glossy is just a bad decision. A lot of us trust these things for somewhat accurate color representation, and while the glossy screens are nice, it's like working with the contrast cranked up over everything you see.

Yup. Not to mention it's a pain in the ass trying to stare through a reflected light source all day... or keep fiddling with the screen to avoid reflections altogether.

Someone will make an anti-glare "sticker" to put over the screen I'm sure now.

Another Apple accessory? Yeesh.. There are times when just a LITTLE customization is a nice thing.

As long as my 12.1 Dell is working I'm not getting much new. I MAY look into a mini that's always on at home though.

The Mini is supposed to be getting an update soon. In fact, it may even be today's One More Thing. I'd wait for the update either way, though.

wow I completely forgot about this. Thanks for the live blogging links. Looks like we're still in the "self felating" portion of the event, so I haven't missed too much.
