Yeah, Verdana was invented as a screen font. Believe it or not, its design was actually commissioned by Microsoft for use in websites. Calibri is the new Verdana, in that it's also a screen font and it was also commissioned by Microsoft. Calibri was also selected as the new favourite font for email, websites and presentations in some design school survey thing I remember reading about.

Anyhoo, Table 5 is right. In print, it's usually best to go with a serif. Those little notches are there to make it easier for your eyes to "traverse the seas of text" within a document.

My recommendation: It may be boring, but Times New Roman will never get you an F for inducing headaches.

Edit: T5's suggestion of Garamond would also do quite well.

I like Calibri, I'm using it more and more.

I've had several people tell me they don't like fonts with tails, like TNR, so when doing resumes or proposals I've always used something tail-less like Arial, but now I'm liking Calibri, it seems easier to read than Arial and only being ever so slightly different.

Cool fact: Arial IS Helvetica with a few minor defects. Basically Microsoft was too cheap to pay for the original Postscript linotypes of Helvetica (the most prolific font in the world), so they created a knockoff and packeged it up in Windows.

Apple put the true fonts into their OS. Part of the reason why the design industry has made Mac's a standard platform...

Try reading a lot of text printed in a sans-serif font (ie Arial) at a standard font size (10-12px) with normal line spacing. I'm talking 5-10 pages worth of text. You'll quickly see why a serif font is superior (and why nearly all printed media uses it).

... For whatever reason I became enamoured with font history. Heck, I've watched a documentary on the origins of Helvetica... I'm THAT cool.

BTW too all you programmer types... Microsoft's new fixed width font "Consolas" is AWESOME. I have replaced my old standard "Monaco" (I'm on a Mac) with 13-14pt Consolas in every editor I use. It's too the point where I can't stand anything else.

Kinda like the people who use Outlook "Stationary".

I now enforce font types and sizes on all incoming emails. I'm not the biggest fan of HTML/Rich Text email...

Funny, Ive actually met Gary Hustwit, who made that movie. It wasn't a bad documentary, but I thought thought it would bore the crap out of anyone who isn't into design....so I'm not sure why anyone outside of the field would watch it.

Honestly, Ive never tried it, since I don't use MS that much (I do most things in Adobe InDesign) so I tend to use other fonts. Seeing as it's a sans-serif, i would probably avoid using it for body-copy.

Some of my favourite fonts come from these two foundries:
http://www.ourtype.be/
or
http://lineto.com/

If anyone has a little cash to spare, and really wants a great typeface for documents that will really elevate your work, i would recommend getting a face from these. However these aren't cheap, and are for higher-end projects, so probably a bit of a waste for a school paper.

Strange that those indicating they can't read a lot of sans serif come to CP for hours on end.....

Bottom line is that there isn't any real difference between serif and sans serif for legibility or readability.

Finally, we should accept that most reasonably designed typefaces in mainstream use will be equally legible, and that it makes much more sense to argue in favour of serif or sans serif typefaces on aesthetic grounds than on the question of legibility.

REDVAN, don't try to be unique with a different font. Hell, use the one the PROF uses. Anything else can only hurt, if it has any impact at all.

Never said it was more legible, but that it was easier on the eyes when you have a lot to read. Just like it's much easier to read black copy on white, as opposed to white on black....it's not easier to understand, but produces less strain on the eye.

Really? I've tried it a few times and could never get over the first few minutes.. I guess I should try and force myself for a while.

Every single programming I font I try usually lasts 2 minutes and then I'm back to courier.

The prof is using garamond, and I am using verdana for now but might switch to match him.

That font just gets to me now. It is everywhere. My friend who does a lot of publishing started pointing it out everywhere we went about a year ago and since then I see it everywhere and cringe. That is a sweet website

Jesus.. 13-14pt.. That's HUGE.

I've always used Courier New and I just tried out Consolas.. It'll take some getting used to, but I can't go higher than 11pt.

What is WRONG with you?

There's a big difference between reading a san serif font on a computer screen and reading it on paper. It's a matter of eye strain.
