GOAT!

Sucks that it doesn't include charities though.
They're the worst... you give to one, and you get 700 calling you.

Has anyone else noticed a jump in calls leading up to Sept 30? Normally we have the same 2 toll free #'s on the phone when we get home from work but yesterday Sept 29th there were at least 5. Trying to get in under the deadline I guess.

This is far to broad imo.
Who Can Still Call You? Consumers should understand that registering on the National DNCL will reduce but not eliminate all telemarketing calls. There are certain kinds of telemarketing calls that are exempted from the National DNCL Rules.
The exemptions include telemarketing calls made by, or on behalf of: - Canadian registered charities;
- Political parties, riding associations and candidates; and
- Newspapers of general circulation for the purpose of soliciting subscriptions.
Telemarketing calls from organizations with whom you have an existing business relationship are also exempt. You are considered to have an existing business relationship with a telemarketer if you: - Purchased, leased, or rented a product or service in the last eighteen (18) months from the telemarketer;
- You have a written contract with the telemarketer for a service that is still in effect or expired within the last eighteen (18) months; and/or
- You asked a telemarketer about a product or service within the last six (6) months.
Telemarketers may also call you if you have provided express consent to be called. Express consent includes: - Your permission on a written form, electronic form, or an online form; or
- Your verbal permission.
The National DNCL Rules to not apply to telemarketing calls made to businesses.

Hopefully this gets rid of the ones that call you with a recording, those are the worst ones.

I'm in the same "never give to charities" boat. I don't want to be on their list. If they think I'm a cheapass, good. I don't want to be bothered.
OR, an alternative. "Hi, this is the Canadian [some disease or ailment] Foundation. If you give us as little as $10, we won't call you again for a year! And if you act now and give us $50, we will remove you from our list for 10 years!"

I tend to lose respect for many charities via telemarketer call. I'll never forget the time somebody lectured me on the phone about not giving money to Firefighter burn victims. That was the worst in a long list of condescending remarks from various charities. Of course they aren't all like that, but in this case a few bad apples really screwed everybody else. I made the mistake of donating a few years back to a charity and what resulted was constant call backs from the same place looking for more money. The groups I support now are groups I seek out.

I don't know why people didn't use the internal do-not-call lists. Maybe they were like me and didn't know they existed?
I support Foster Parents Plan. However, they would call me every 6 to 8 weeks asking if I could possibly give more. The first few times I tried to explain that I really didn't have a lot of spare cash and giving what I was was already a strain on my pocketbook. Yet the calls just kept on coming. Then I was told charities had the same do-not-call lists that businesses had... stopped the calls instantaneously.

Thanks,
added both mine and my parents. I don't get many calls, the last one I got I gave the poor girl a headache trying to convince her that in order for me to switch my credit card to MBNA they'd have to make their rewards program better. I said I'd switch if they gave me 5 time the points per dollar. It didn't work, and she agreed with me I shouldn't switch.
I guess those days are gone now
