hair cutters get nothing from me. I have next to no hair, I figure them charging me full price for 5 minutes work is tip enough. Restaurants it's 15-20% for good service and zero for poor.

I've only left $0 once in my life at a BP.

Speaking of friends and tipping...
I used to have a friend who, when the bill came, started out saying he didn't have enough for a tip. This is at a place we would frequent quite often. So the first few times, the rest of us would more or less cover his tip. After a while we told the waitress, he was not throwing in a tip, so it looked like the other 3 of us were cheaping out also, as the tip was missing 1 person out of 4. Then we started asking for seperate bills. Shortly after he would get everything on 1 bill, and pay on his Visa, without his tip again, and take our money.
At about this point we told him either to tip, get his own tab, or not come out for lunch with us. He started tipping.
It bugs me when bad or no tippers are on the same bill as me and it looks like I am a cheap prick also, because I am not.

As far as tipping goes, I usually leave between $5 and $10. But I always have change, so I can make the tip an even amount.
ie: bill = $35.40 leave $42.40 = $7 tip.
Makes it easier on the waitress, plus it cleans up some of the change I have in my pocket. Win Win for me.

25-30% for service I consider to be better than what was required
15% for average.
0% for bad

The ceiling for me is really unlimited and depends on the food service and service quality. When I was in San Fran with my former g/f we went to this really ###### place - food was expensive and portions were pathetic but service was fantastic, probably the best I ever had. I made a point of tipping 5$ and personally giving the server 50$ (probably a 40%+ tip, largest % I have ever given). Because IMO the restraunt staff didnt deserve the tip, the server did. It didnt hurt that she was fairly attractive and even my g/f thought she did an excellent job.

I dont know if she split the tip with the rest of the staff or not. If she did, she did them a service cause apart from her, the restraunt was complete faux crap.

For tipping other services, I really detest tipping most pizza places so I pickup most of the time. I always use self service cause I again I hate the thought of tipping station attendents. I do tip at the place I get my hair cut cause at MVP I have never had a bad hair cut and they also arent pushy like other places over selling their product.

It bugs me when "holier than thou" tippers are on the same bill and get mad when they have to throw in extra to bring my 15% tip up to 30%. Not saying you're this guy...

eg. A bill for 2 burgers and 2 beers comes to $35. Putting $20 each equates to just over 15% of a before tax tip. For standard run of the mill everyday service I'm more than comfortable tipping this. Friend A puts in his $20, Friend B puts in $25 being the big tipper. Friend B than looks at bill realizes tip is too low and feels the needs to put in $5 more while looking down on Friend A. Friend A feels insulted that he is essentially being called "cheap" by Friend B over a 15% tip.

.
No, I'm not an overtipper at all. I am avg, start out at 15% and work up or down from there.
I'm talking about someone who throws in $20 when their bill is $19.25 for average/good service and food.

What is the consensus on take out orders? I picked up dinner from a restaurant last night and tipped $5 on a $34 dollar tab. Really all she did was grab the food from the kitchen and run through my card. I never thought about it until now.

Do you folks tip the same, or at all, when picking up a phone in order?

Depends...usually I'd say no but I tipped a sushi place pretty good a few months ago after they went out of there way to squeeze me in when I was in a bind.

I also like to tip random places depending on extraordinary service. I tipped a lady at sport chek once...better yet I bought a case of beer for the guys at minute lube last month because they squeezed me in 1 min before close. The guy was so stoked on the beer he ended up giving me $10 off my $40 oil change...

Perhaps I'm just cold as ice, but I can't justify rewarding poor service. I'm not much of a ball buster but if the server is rude or insensitive they get very little extra out of me.

an example:

Shanks during the playoffs. Really good server, I actually liked her and thought she did a fine job (not the norm at Shanks). However, when the bill came I noticed there was an extra 25$ in hi-balls tacked on. My group was incredibly annoyed but I sided with the server. I was sure it was an honest mistake and decided to just explain the situation and get it taken care of. However when I brought it up to her she insisted that the hi-balls were mine and she remembered me order them at the beginning of the night. I informed her that I haven't had a drink in almost a decade, but she told me I was lying to her. Using my inside voice, I calmly said one more time that one way or another we weren't going to buy some other tables drinks, and that it would be best to remove it from the bill. I guess that was too complicated, so we just deducted the cost of the hi-balls from the tip, which coincidentally was about 100% of it.

Yes, I do realize the tips go elsewhere (kitchen etc.). For that reason I do actually feel bad not tipping, but obviously not enough to stop. Servers who act rudely and expect a reward for it infuriate me.

I don't usually tip when I pick anything up. I'm a pretty generous tipper too. I actually get really annoyed when I go to a takeout place (like Thi Thi subs) and on their debit machine they ask for a tip. GET BENT, it's takeaway and the cost of the sub includes the cost of you making it for me.

Hairstylists get 10% minimum from me, sometimes more depending on how it came out.

I always tip 15% minimum on decent service in a restaurant. If it sucks I tip 10, and go down from there. Depends on the problem though....if the waitress is a biyatch I adjust accordingly. If she's run off her feet and I see that I give her 15% for effort, usually cash, so she can pocket it.

For those of you that think tipping is a bad idea and we should just pay higher wages; travel to Australia where there is no tipping. The only thing you get there is GARBAGE service, and they have no incentive whatsoever to do anything about it. At least in Canada you can have that little bit of vindication when you screw them on a tip for being useless.

I had a server try that on me and a few buddies at Limericks a while back.

After several conversations with her and the manager we paid the tab.

To the Penny. No tip.....

Surprisingly enough we were denied service after that....

Yeah, probably because they're too stupid to count, at the job they shouldn't have, to have to pay for their own gas in the 70,000 dollar Lexus SUV their Daddy just bought for them for their sweet 16.

If I ever heard one of the girls at my work bitch like that, I would ream her out for being a spoiled brat. And stupid. And smelling bad as well.

That's interesting considering tipping is not mandatory.

I always calculate is as a minimum of 15% rounding the sum of the tip and bill up to the nearest dollar, and if it's good service, then obviously a higher percentage, rounded up. I do this regardless of whether I'm paying cash or debit. It makes no sense to me that a waitress wouldn't want me to round up, and would rather take less money ($.50 on average) for the tradeoff of not needing to remember (or write down) a couple extra digits.

Gas Stations - No way. In Richmond, BC, it's a bylaw that all gas stations must be full service.

Hair Stylists - No, but I shave my head.

Pizza Delivery - Almost all places charge extra for delivery... so no.

Newspaper Couriers - Um, no.

Pick up orders at restaurants - For what?

I'll tip when I normally don't if some one clearly made some sort of concession for me, but if in the restaurant example where I'm picking up food and the server is friendly, smiles and gets me my food, why would I tip him/her?

Why on earth do some of you reward poor service? That is beyond me. If the service is good, or even adequate, then certainly a tip is warranted, always a minimum of 15% from me. However, I'm not going to reward poor service period. The only way to get better service out there is to reward the servers accordingly. It is not mandatory to tip so, IMO, it has to be earned by the service I do or don't receive. Isn't that the way it should be?

I have become more and more against tipping. I have posted this article before, but it has some good points if you missed it buried in another thread somewhere. I think that my favorite is when he notes that the new standard is 20%, but no one seems to know why:

Apparently tipping in Europe at restaurants is rare, and when I did it, the fellows from Germany laughed at me. I still got good service etc. This was in Switzerland.

If I am tipping, I usually tip in the 15-25% range (subject to performance) and I will write the total on the bill (so for example) I would write in $40 for a $33.18 bill. If a server has a problem with that, I will gladly never tip again. I see no difference for visa versus cash versus debit. I track all of my expenses, and it is way easier to data enter $40 than $33.18 (cause I would type $33.81 and never notice and be out that mount at the end of the month for my statement reconciliations). It is really not worth the the hassle.

In terms of what I tip

Gas Station guy - zip, mostly cause I never do full serve
Hair Sylist - $5
Pizza Delivery guy - rarely use (I usually pick up in the neighborhood), but when we get one, it is around 15%
Newspaper courier - never get the paper, and would never tip
Pickup at restaurant - don't tip (agree - for what am I tipping)
Guy who cleans my clubs at golf course - $1/$2 (depending on what is in my golf bag)
Baby Sitter - $5-$10 depending on how long we were gone
Cleaning staff at hotel - usually the spare change that accumulates on the night stand over the time I am there
Strippers - $20 if the service is really good ;-)
