Obviously none have been with toilet lids but I recall Cowboys has strict security and it's tough to bring in weapons. Unfortunately, the suspect found a way of using something within the club.

I haven't been to the new Cowboys or even the old location in years (too old for nightclubs!) but most of the patrons then were college kids like myself at the time and it appeared fairly safe. Not too many preppy, nerdy college kids with futures ahead of them are trying to cause trouble beyond the odd fist fight. Maybe things have changed.

Comparing a cowboy bar to a Las Vegas club doesn't make sense. How many cowboy clubs look like ultra-shek Vegas night clubs? The old location had a barn feel to it which seems country to me.

Also, what's Cowbows?
I think you missed the point.

My hatred of Cowboys has nothing to do with this incident. This could have happened anywhere, I was just also mentioning that I find dirty clubs to not have a lot of appeal to me. Barn feel=bad. to me at least.

Like ultra-chic but somewhat less so.

The annoying thing about Cowboys is that it's reputation is far better than it should be. It's an uninspired theme, it looks shabby, and in no way represents the better side of Calgary. That's why so many dislike it so much to bring it up whenever the subject arises - like Adam Sandler, Coldplay, and the NBA, there is an inexplicable hype around a less than mediocre product.

Nowhere? Then the 'only at Cowboys' statement has a certain amount of truth to it.

Face it, Cowboys is a fairly unique establishment in both its ambiance and its clientele. There is nothing wrong with pointing that out.

Thats not to say that every Cowboy's patron is a toilet tank-lid wielding maniac, many are maniacs of a very generic and docile variety. But yet, that establishment does manage to attract the crazies by a fairly astonishing percentage.

Dont let that stop you, hell, its half the fun at Cowboys, whats gonna happen tonight?

Well there was the girl who had her head (repeatedly) struck with a bathroom door at 'The Bank' Nightclub (Stephen Ave) around 1997?

Not much different to see a girl struck over and over until her head is pulp? Especially when finding out it was not over drugs, just ego.

The big problem is with these super sized clubs and not really the name of said super sized club.

I honestly thought crimes like this wouldn't happen in Canada........just like the bus incident. I always get surprised when I read stories like this. I lived there 8 years ago now, but it feels like it was so much safer back then. Or else I was just young and naiive.

We have fewer murders but we're much more creative.

Artistic license and all that.

You know, in the article it said that this was Calgary's 25th homicide of the year. Here is a link to an article from the newspaper that shows that in November 2007, San Jose had reached its 31st homicide of the year, the highest in a decade. Ok we're in August, do you guys think there will be 7 more murders from now til November? Maybe, maybe not, but there isn't that much less crime in Calgary than San Jose!

You have to wait until Christmas, thats homicide season 'round these parts...general hate for family members and all that. In-Laws are particular targets.

Such a heinous act, and knowing the Canadian justice system this man will only get 3 years. I feel horrible for the victims family.

Well, Canada is full of people, just like everywhere else. Not sure what makes us any different.

Nothing makes Canadians different, I guess I always had an idealistic image of the country as being very safe, especially in comparison to the US. From my above stats..the murder rate in Calgary is surprisingly similar to San Jose, CA.
