How about the weiner haus (or whatever it's called), that gives you a foot long in a crusty french bread. How's that for lobbing an easy one Fotze's way!

Try the Siding Cafe at Center and 7th (i know it is a block off of Stephen Avenue).
Good food, reasonable prices. It is a place i take friends to, rather than where i would take clients.
Best regards,

Murietta's is a favourite of mine when I'm in Calgary for business. The food is good, but what I really enjoy is the atmosphere. IIRC they have a good draft beer and wine selection as well.

Belgo has some damn fine, um, decor?...
But even with the new menu there are some duds on there.
Escoba is nice if you are a wine person. The duck is great.
Unicorn can't be beat for wings. And great place to watch a game.
Tribune (next to the Joyce) has some different dishes that are not the regular fare. The steak & frites is great. Anyone for rabbit as an appy?
Others mentioned above are all good too.

if looking for a more upscale steakhouse i would say chicago chophouse on stephen ave and 5th st. it's just a little off the pedestrian only area of stephen ave... the only other upscale ones worth recommending are off stephen ave. such as caesars or vintage chophouse.
i don't really recommend ruth's chris because it's american beef, and they heat their plates so the bottom part of the steak is always cooked more than the top from the heat on the plate. it gives an uneven cook job even if the chef does it right...

Boo, that place is horrible. It's overpriced. It's more expensive than a great steakhouse like Ceasars or Hy's, but not even as good of a restaraunt as the Keg.
No offence, but my description of that place is as follows (I've said this just about every time someone asks me about it):
"Chicago Chophouse is where people with bad taste in restaraunts take people to impress them with their taste in restaraunts"
I'd much rather go to any one of The Keg, Saltlik, Vintage or Ceasars before I go to the Chicago Chophouse.
That being said, for casual dining, Original Joe's just opened up across from the Joyce. For that matter, for pubs, the Joyce and Bear and Kilt both have pretty good pub food.
For BBQ, The Palomino is just a block off Stephen Ave (7th and center) and it is fantastic BBQ.

Yup, any place that thinks they can charge ~$20 for a steak sandwich that is worse than one I can get at the French Maid (allegedly ) really needs to step it up.
When it comes to restaraunts Expensive != Good

really? i like most of the places you guys have mentioned thus far, so i'm definitely not the guy with bad taste in restaurants who just goes to impress a woman that i'm there...i'm usually there with male work colleagues when i do get to go, so it isn't about impressing...
i will admit, i do like their steaks, their ribeye in particular is good because most places don't get the bone-in ribeye. I also really enjoy their appetizers (short ribs, cajun beef wellingtons), and they do a pretty good bison dish...
i don't know, i think that i like the fact that it isn't as traditional as a place like caesar's or hy's (RIP)...although both those places are/were fine fine restaurants

I'll admit that the food isn't bad there, just that instead of being a great restaraunt it seems that their reputation is based on the $9 beer theory.
It's expensive so it must be good. I've got no problem eating there if someone else is paying, but I'll never spend a cent of my own money there.

Maybe that's why. I always use the expense card.

/\ What this guys said.
I've been to Saltlik, and the prices are really not that bad, which is why I avoided that place, since I thought it would be one of those $100 steak places. You are paying close to The Keg prices.
I've a few friends in the law industry, and they say the same thing everyone else has been saying about that Chophouse place. The steaks are about equal to what you would get at The Keg or Saltlik, but they are way more expensive.
Vintage is probably the best I've had so far (besides my own) but they are pricey. Still, it's cool that they actually bring out the cuts of meat for you to examine and pick before they cook it for you.
