Got to disagree. The 100 M backstroke, freestyle, butterfly, the relays, etc are all so different events/techniques. As Machiavelli said, track is the same way. Leave it how it is.

I'm not a swimming fan either but a lot of those competitions require different skills.

I'm sure that's exactly why there are so many events.

How many different skills does a hockey/soccer/basketball player have? Way more than a swimmer, and they can only get ONE medal.

They should add different events.
Have a game of HORSE for medals for Basketball.
Also have American 21 and just regular 21
Then add 2on2 NBA Jam style.
Hockey should add the skills comp where countries get medals based on the results of each event.

Regardless of whether or not there should be one medal or several in swimming, I'm curious as to whether or not you have ever swam competitively? Freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke are all completely different races requiring different skills. As a swimmer as well as a soccer and basketball player, I would say that all require a great deal of skill and to say that those team sports require "way more" skill than swimming is not giving swimmers enough credit at all for their abilities and skill.

No, it's really not. When's the last time someone in track competed both in hurdles and regular track events?
When someone like Phelps can go in and dominate all these different styles of swimming it's pretty obvious that the differences between them are pretty insignificant.

I did swim race, but not very well. You only have to master a couple of motions in a given swimming event. A basketball player has to learn hundreds of motions.

Having many medals in swimming is fine. Calling Phelps the greatest olympian ever just because he's won more medals that anyone else is NOT fine. The vast majority of athletes don't have the oppurtunity to compete in multiple events, like swimmers do.
What Phelps has done is incredible, and is in the running for "best olympian ever," but don't base that discussion on number of medals won.
