Dumb question. Did you run HD lines from your dish to the receiver?

my question is why did panasonic include a cable with DVI if the TV has HDMI? and since DVI has been pretty much made obselete by HDMI. The only thing I can think of is that your TV has a input for a computer also but this still is quite strange??

That cable is provided by Bell with their 9242 PVR. It is a HDMI to DVI cable plus an extension with a DVI to HDMI, so you end up with HDMI to HDMI and it will come in handy if you want to connect your PC. I never had any problems with it but that's not to say some people won't.
Has the opening poster had any luck?

I switched cables to one I bought from Monoprice, and same thing. I think I just was expecting too much from HD, but I really cant tell any difference.

Take a HD and non HD channel picture with a digital camera and post them, we'll tell you if it's HD!

I had Bell come and install a dish about 2 years ago. It was NOT for HD viewing. I'm now in the market for an HD tv, and will be getting the Bell HD PVR. Did I read this right? I need to get them to come back and run some new wires from the dish to the receiver?
Also, a little off topic, but which of these TV's would you guys say is the better choice? I pretty much have it narrowed down to these 2:
Sharp Aquos 46" LCD ( http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...gon=&langid=EN)
or
Toshiba 46" LCD ( http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...gon=&langid=EN)
Thanks for any help. I'm not good with this kind of stuff.

My understanding is that you need 2 - RG6 coax cables to get HD. I think they usually pull 4 cables now...2 per sattelite. I am pretty sure this is because of the dual tuner in the HD PVR's.
To the OP - There is something wrong with your setup, man. HD is massively better than SD if done right. How about giving some details about which receiver and TV you have?

First post... Panasonic Viera 42" http://www.panasonic.ca/english/audi...h42_50px80.asp
Bell HD PVR 9242 receiver
And thats it.
Makes me sad... However I am getting the local installation people to come out (not where I got the TV from) to put it on the wall and the wires in the wall, so I will ask them what the deal is.

Just to clarify. For HD you need 4 RG6 wires heading into the SW44 switch. From that switch, the 9242 uses 2 wires. However RG6 is RG6; there is no special RG6 for HD.
So the SW44 is usually installed inside the house, but it can be installed outside.

If that link is right and you paid $1299 for your set, you can go to futureshop and get a 42" 1080p Sharp Aquos for the same price.

Its on HDMI input 1
Anyways I guess I can tell the difference now... Sat down with my wife and flipped back and forth between the Jays game in HD vs reg sports net. I thought it would be better, but I can tell the difference... I could notice the pimple on Roy Halladays neck lol

Yeah, the true power of HD doesn't come out until you see a blu-ray (or some source where the compression doesn't kill the visuals) source.

The problem is that most TV shows are still taped in SD and then upconverted (or whatever). Try watching channels like Rush or Oasis on Bell and you will see it's not even close. The good news is that it's getting better every year. Survivor, for example, will be taped in HD for the first time this season.
Don't fool yourself and think that there isn't much difference. The problem is with the source of the content itself.
|
Maybe there is no refence point for normal programing. For sports, perhaps it is easier to read a jersey number or see a puck or ball. The grass looks great in an NFL game. Blu-ray movies obviously look great as do HD video games.
As for normal programing, I'm not looking to see more pores on a lawyers face in an HD court room drama, or that his suit is "bluer". To myslef (and don't kid yourself, millions of others that aren't "Techies" don't see a major difference between SD and HD in most instances) there are only a few instances in which HD really "pops", and most programming doesn't provide it.

I guess everybodies different but when I got my first HDTV with Bell HD, I was very impressed and never wanted to watch SD again. I agree the picture from Bell has degraded in some instances but it's still very good. I also think people should take some time and try to callibrate their set, well at least take it off of torch mode, especially for plasmas.

The difference should be a lot more dramatic than having to look closely to find a pimple on a neck!
My guess is that your TV isn't set for 1080i or 720p (HDTV) for some reason. You probably are looking at 480p (EDTV) resolution, judging by what you have described.
Look in the setup menu for your tv and start poking around for a resolution setting. I don't have the Panny, so I couldn't tell you specific instructions.

I knew someone who used Bell for HD, and couldn't get the extremely sharp picture no matter what he did. I went over and couldn't even figure out why, and didn't have the time or patience to deal with their customer service.
He switched to Shaw, and noticed a huge difference in picture quality.

So just so I have this straight ....
does the cable that runs from the smaller box in that picture have to be RG6? I was told that regular everyday cable runs to your HD PVR thing, and then the RG6 cable runs from the receiver to the tv. Is this right? Or have I run the wrong cable?

Lol, i said that when I went to Bell - so he must be talking in reverse.
1. As for the wiring of for HD - there are NO special lines, it's just RG6 sat cable.
2. You DON'T have to go into a SW44 to get it, 2 SW21's will do fine. the 44 just allows for 4 output sources.
3. If anything, i think its the TV. Seriously, Panasonic - really not that great. Still you should see a difference. Sell the TV and get a Aquos or Bravia. (but really get the Aquos)
4. The reason everyone is saying Gaming and Blue ray is the True HD - it's in 1080p and Satellite/Shaw HD is only in 1080i.
5. Make sure your TV and Reciever are set to Broadcast/Recieve 1080i. This is very important
6. Go to 3
