Sadly your cousin is not alone.

Every high school confiscates hundreds of "weapons" each year.

My son was attacked 3 times throughout high school.

In grade 10 he was jumped, from behind in a hallway, (in front of a teacher) for bumping someones elbow.

In grade 11 he and a couple of friends were jumped, again from behind by a larger group of people.
Story is here: http://www.projectalberta.com/board/...violence#14666
You will have to scroll down a bit.

In grade 12, again it was a larger group attacking; when they went to another school to pick up his buddies girlfriend. This time there were weapons, glass bottles, belts and brass knuckles. He and one friend were taken to hospital via ambulance and required stitches.

It is not a matter of whether we live in a safe city or not; it is more a matter that we do not encourage young people to speak out.

The media does not cover stuff like this. The schools don't want it covered in the media; they don't even admit to parents it goes on! ! !

If your cousin even feels threatened; please do not take it lightly. Have him talk to his parents and the school liason officer.

People need to open their eyes. High school kids who are already involved in violence are tomorrows gang members.

Does your cousin know Richard McKain by chance?

All due respect to your son as I don't know him, but being jumped 3 times in 3 years sounds too often to be just random acts of violence. From my experience, when things like this happen frequently, they are often doing something to attract it... and quite often it is their own attitudes and/or aggressions that do it. It reminds me of that Oiler fan in Calgary a while back who said that he is always beaten up just for liking the Oilers, while hundreds of other Oiler fans in the city never have that happen. There is probably more to the story.

Or it could just be that he is extremely unlucky. I'm not trying to judge. It's just that high school kids often lead double lives and are different people at school than at home.

The first two were completely random, unprovoked attacks. There are adult witnesses to both. I mentioned the teacher in the first one and if you read my link to the post for the second one, you would see adults were also present.

The third, has mixed versions. I had witnesses approach me online who felt my son (and/or his friends) instigated it. I encouraged them to come forward with information.

If you read anything I have written about any of the incidents; you will know I only wanted the truth exposed. Even if that meant my own child was guilty of something.

Ha, my one friend who just moved back to Winnipeg this Saturday is a smart guy, and carries around a knife.

I think he's kinda paranoid with people out to get him or something though...

I find the following to be pretty good advice:

I took a pocket knife to school one time, and it was because I wore the same pantaloons that I had worn to boyscouts a few nights prior. I think I was 10 or 12 years old. It was not for any protection, just an accident. Otherwise the few times I got into fights, I used my fists.

I do live in a relatively safe part of town, still, but I never got involved in anything that remotely was dangerous. Although my ex went to a high school where a kid got murdered in the hallway though, so I guess it depends what part of town you're in.

Violence is NOT USUALLY random (sometimes it is, I know, but generally it is safe here). I would suggest to people who say their kids need to carry a weapon, that they investigate what their kid is doing and who they are hanging out with.

Edit: this is my 2000th post!

I carried a pocket knife with me everyday during high school.

But it was more for utility purposes.

Wow this scares me. My oldest daughter is going into grade 3 and I feel that she is safe there but now I am scared for her when she makes it to high school.

On another topic when I went to high school back in BC there were drugs and a bit of violence, about the usual amount I would say. But I went back a couple years ago to see what changed in the city and I was shocked to see that the school doubled in size and there are more cameras on the outside then there are in most prisons. I asked around why this happened and they said that the drugs and violence sky rocketed so they had to put those measures in place.

What is this world coming to?

But you don't know what happenned hours, days, or weeks before. Perhaps there is more history to the event than you know and the witnesses only saw the culmination of that. Kids aren't always up front about that stuff.

I had a friend back in high school who was jumped by a group of kids that he was feuding with (and it was his own fault), but if an adult had been there when he was jumped, it would have looked unprovoked.

Again, I don't know your kid, so I'll just keep it a general comment that people tend to attract these events when they occur with frequency. Parents also tend to have a strong bias towards their own kid. I know my parents thought I was an angel and that every bad thing that happenned to me was due to other people's doings. They didn't know half the crap that I was into. In retrospect, like most kids who get into trouble, I played the victim role pretty good and usually had teachers and such on my side.

I tend to agree with you.
I've found that 9 times out of 10 there isn't really such a thing as an unprovoked attack. Especially if there are adults around. Seems to me that if someone is going to randomly jump someone, they probably wouldn't do it in front of a teacher or some other adult.

I know I dont feel safe travelling without my Gat. A Cap 9 just doesnt cut it these days.

One nevers knows when the situation may warrant popping a cap into someone's ass.

These things happen, why just last week at the supermarket this bitch cut me off with her cart and it was on!!....

People have to relax a little.

4x4 - trust me, it is a real challenge not to mock the crap out of him. I am trying to talk him out of it before he ends up in a hospital or jail. Seriously I know Calgary has an escalating problem, but its not the extent that you have to carry weapons. I'm not that old, I'm 23 and was in grade 12 about five years ago and I know what its sort of like knowing which parts of the school not to go to, I did see alot of stabbings and knife fights but I never felt threatened about it anyways and just tryed not to get involved. He probably will mature with age, I remember back in grade 2 I used to carry around a stick "just in case" and I thought it was like an x-box, or I was an x-men.

TBQH... I think he does it more to be a gangsta' then for fear. I don't think he even knows how to use a weapon. He'd probably forget to take the safety off the gun if someone gave him a semi-auto, or whatever.

I don't know if there is a random violance problem in high schools, I think there is definately history that causes violence.

If that's real, then we need to get him on a table and dissect him immediately!

Seriously, I wish he was a Flames fan in the front row. He could trip up the opposing players.
