To be safe, you can disable data roaming on your phone. Go to Settings->General->Network to do it. The phone even tells you right there that this feature is used to "avoid substantial roaming charges".
Just as a heads up, that doesn't work in the US, but does in Europe. At least that has been my experience. I had to clear my data settings to stop transfer.

Ungh, that's nasty. Thanks for the heads up. I sure wouldn't want notice that by seeing the monthly bill after the fact.

I was in Seattle with my iPhone last weekend with data roaming turned off. I did not receive any data while that setting was enabled, and my phone would remind me whenever I tried to get data that it couldn't while data roaming was off.

Unfortunately that meant the Maps application was mostly useless as it couldn't download local maps once i left my hotels free wireless network. I hope that in the future you can push maps to your iPhone (by zipcode maybe?) to access the feature without needing network coverage.

(Clarification note, the GPS still works while roaming, it is just the maps that you no longer have access to)

so it would follow you around, you just couldn't search out a certain area? I would like to see a way to download a map to your phone before hand. Not sure how long or how much data that would take up.
