Having not seen the movie I can't comment, but The Dark Knight Returns, Year One, Hush, The Killing Joke, Tower of Babel (ok Justice League there but centered on the Bat) are all amazing.
I can't wait for this movie

I don't think you're allowed to say that in this forum. If you didn't like the movie your address is tracked down and a hitman is sent to your house to kill you.

I've read all those and i think the movie is better them then all except for Dark Knight and Tower of Babel. But tower of babel doesn't really count, but if they ever made a JLA movie they should base it on that.
My personal favorite batman comic is the No Man's land story arc. They incorporate some of that into the movie.

Is anyone else going at midnight tonight? There are still tickets for the showing at Silvercity, I'm trying to con my brother into going, however he isn't as irresponsible as I am and feels bad about going to work all red-eyed and half-asleep.

There are some pretty obvious parts from The Killing Joke that are in the movie too. I haven't yet seen it but even the "hello commissioner" is from about 2/3 through the comic IIRC. The interrogation room thing is similar too.

The majority of Batman comics are crap. There is maybe one or two good storylines a year. For the one-shot series there are a few outstanding ones but as viceral and engaging as the movie experience.
They are completely different mediums and thusly aspire to different things. The latest Joker's Asylum series is very good.
The problem is I don't see how you can possibly "PRETEND" that you don't know anything about Batman when you obviously do and your opinion is colored by those beliefs...unless you had Zatanna mind-wipe that part of you. In that case, get me her phone number. I want to get into her top hat.

I went to a midnight showing as well, and I thought it was a great movie. I wouldn't give it 9.7 out of 10, but I'd give it a high 8 or 9.

Yeah I thought it was outstanding. Ledger's performance is unreal...but as are all of the performances.
Having Gary Oldman as Gordon is huge...and he has a lot more to work with in this film compared to the list.
What I found interesting is that really it's not a 'batman' movie in that he wasn't central to all the action. It was more of an ensemble piece where Dent, Gordon, Batman, and of course the Joker all played equal roles.
I did think it was a little longer than it needed to be and could have been shaved down a bit in some spots. But that's a minor quibble.
Fun time.

It's an excellent movie. The deepest and darkest summer blockbuster I can recall but completely entertaining. Well worth seeing at the midnight showing.

It was already shaved down 30 minutes from the initial screening they had in June.
That was definitely the fastest 2.5 hours that went by.

I saw it last night at a midnight showing as well and have to give it full marks. It's almost just as much a straight up crime drama as it is a super hero movie. Very dark, very serious, very cool. As Jiri said, it's almost equal parts of Bruce Wayne/Batman, Harvey Dent and The Joker with a shot of Gordon and Rachel Dawes every here and there. They all shine with Heath Ledger's Joker being the obvious stand-out. I wish I could talk about some spoilers but won't for obvious reasons. Solid "AAA" grade on first viewing. Can't wait till the Blu-ray hits.

That's one of the things that I felt made the movie as good as it is. With so much going on in the story you can't have just one character carrying most of it, especially with a cast like this one. Everyone had their moment and they didn't disappoint. Eckhart as Harvey "Two-Face" Dent was such a great casting choice. He brought so much to that character.
