Had a thought about this last night. There was an english nobleman who did some tests on this several hundred years ago. Wish I could remember the name or some details to look it up. He hung up long sheets of fabric out in his ground, 50 yards apart, and then fired shots through them, and tracked where they passed through each layer of fabric. Two key differences: he was using musket balls, which operate very differently from bullets; and he was attempting to curve the balls by having his gunsmith curve the barrel of the gun.
The result that he expected was that if the barrel was curved to the left, the ball would continue to arc further to the left as it passed through each sheet. But the result was the opposite: the ball would start spinning clockwise as a result of the left-leaning curve, and thus cut through the air back toward the right. You could essentially curve a shot around an obstacle.
In theory, with a musket you should be able to replicate just about any effect that a baseball pitcher can achieve by modifying the barrel. Could you do this without a curved barrel? Possibly, if you spun the gun so fast that at the moment the gun was fired, there was enough speed to create friction between the side of the barrel and the ball. It would probably take superhuman speeds though. (I like the thought of a mythbusters experiment that involves a musket gun swinging at superhuman speeds on one of Grant's robots, firing mid-swing.)
The only way you could apply a similar effect to a modern bullet is by applying a non-symetrical spin to the bullet. And bullets (even ones with special grooves cut into them) simply don't work that way; they have to spin at a tangent to their path (there's probably a word for that spin, someone with more knowledge of physics, feel free to chime in).
It would have been cool if Wanted had picked up on those physics and had bullets that were essentially musketballs with grooves cut into them to act like little baseballs.
Edit: Reaper, no kidding about the nerdiness. Now that I think about it, I realize that was from the Blue Harvest episode where Chris was Luke, but at the time that I was thinking about it, I never thought of that detail, just of Luke decapitating Danny Elfman.
